Hollow Heart
Hollow Heart | Viola Di Grado
13 posts | 5 read | 25 to read
Finalist for the 2016 PEN Literary Award for Translation In this courageous, inventive, and intelligent novel, Viola di Grado tells the story of a suicide and what follows. She has given voice to an astonishing vision of life after life, portraying the awful longing and sense of loss that plague the dead, together with the solitude provoked by the impossibility of communicating. The afterlife itself is seen as a dark, seething place where one is preyed upon by the cruel and unrelenting elements. Hollow Heart will frighten as it provokes, enlighten as it causes concern. If ever there were a novel that follows Kafkas prescription for a book to be a frozen axe for the sea within us, it is Hollow Heart. From the Trade Paperback edition.

A warning for suicide and this sounds trite but this novel is haunting. This is wonderfully written as the protagonist comes to terms with her afterlife and what she has done and the effects it has on the world without being able to affect it physically herself anymore. Weird and wonderful. Put this in for indie press on #readingwomenchallenge #womenintranslation @Andrew65 @ephemeralwaltz

ephemeralwaltz Ooh interesting. NEVER heard of this, adding to the TBR. 6y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz I only found it because of my personal goal to read more women in translation this year. So glad I did. It's on scribd if you have it 6y
ephemeralwaltz I don't but thank you! That's great - I need to read more women in translation as well. Have to get to 6y

ephemeralwaltz @Weaponxgirl I really liked it!! I'm excited to start the second one. Hope you enjoy! 6y
batsy I added it to my Goodreads before I joined Litsy but haven't gotten around to it. It sounds really intriguing! 6y
Weaponxgirl @batsy it was different from anything I've read before and it was different in a good way from what I was expecting. Don't know what I was expecting before though 6y
Andrew65 This looks great, thanks for posting it and tagging me in. 👍 6y
Weaponxgirl @Andrew65 no problem 😀 6y

It‘s immediately evident that this is not going to be your average ghost story. Dorotea navigates the living world from the perspective of the afterworld. She visits people and places she knew while living, all the while returning daily to her corpse to fascinate in its decomposition. A unique read that will resonate with those living with depression.

Reviewsbylola That definitely sounds intriguing, and a little morbid. 8y

Just finished this incredible book. It is dark and beautiful. This book is a sad exploration of the afterlife of lonely Dorotea. It will move you, it will disgust you, it will break your heart. The writing is highly skilled even when deeply disturbing. This one will haunt me for a long time.

ReadingOver50 Amazing cover art 8y
SoniaC @ReadingOver50 yes it's a beautiful book inside and out. 8y
