Deptford Trilogy: Fifth Business; The Manticore; World of Wonders (Revised)
Deptford Trilogy: Fifth Business; The Manticore; World of Wonders (Revised) | Robertson Davies
7 posts | 14 read | 9 to read
Who killed Boy Staunton?Around this central mystery is woven a glittering, fantastical, cunningly contrived trilogy of novels. Luring the reader down labyrinthine tunnels of myth, history, and magic, "The Deptford Trilogy" provides an exhilarating antidote to a world from where "the fear and dread and splendour of wonder have been banished."

Episode 101 The Fifth Business is now live! We discuss Robertson Davies' Jungian masterpiece and riff on the cleverness of having your initial book in a trilogy be “fifth business“ for the rest of the series. I also talk about how I accidentally hit my 3rd grade teacher in the face with a soccer ball. So, a little something for everyone!

The main course for tonight is Robertson Davies' novel, “Fifth Business.“ The beginning novel of the Deptford Trilogy, we were recommended this novel by our listeners and boy were they right. We break down the plot and the themes and our favorite passages before discussing the fantastic ending. High recommend from us both. Enjoy!

Looking for a June Book of the Month

Graywacke What an intriguing stack! 2y
rwmg I thoroughly enjoyed the Deptford Trilogy. I started Laurus but didn't get very far before I DNF-ed it - which may have been due to me coming down with Covid at the time. 2y
Therewillbebooks @rwmg Those are the two that I'm leaning towards doing. 2y
jlhammar I loved Three Day Road (and his later novel, The Orenda). Good luck deciding! 2y
Therewillbebooks @jlhammar Thanks! I loved The Orenda too. 2y

Strange little tale that reminds me a bit of John Irving's writing.. meandering storyline, weird characters.. interesting read though.. third book not as tip top as first two.. that one reminds me a bit of Thomas Mann the magic mountain - pages of philosophical discussion.. 🙂

#BookMail from Oxford! I wanted this exact edition of the Deptford Trilogy and for some reason it wasn‘t available through Chapters. Blackwell‘s obliged, though, and sent a handsome vintage bookmark along with it 😊

rwmg A Canadian has to get their Robinson Davies fix from the UK? 🙄🤐🤯 4y
rabbitprincess @rwmg This particular edition, apparently! The individual paperbacks are available more readily. 4y

Long and muggy day at work. If I had any brain power left, I could pull a few more Canadians off the shelf - but this is all I could come up with on Fun Photo Friday. Canadian Literature is something I perpetually want to read more of, including some these authors! Thanks for all the reccs!

Spiderfelt Robertson Davies! I read the last of the Deptford Trilogy while away for the weekend with my knitting girlfriends. They knit, I stayed in my room and read. 8y
Bry The Deptford Trilogy is great! For a few years in a row, I read a Robertson Davies trilogy every spring...it might be time to re-visit them. I love his writing style. 8y

$5 book sale find #19:
Robertson Davies was a stuck up, opinionated, sexist snob well into his 80s when I came of age back in the 80s. Apparently, he's also a wonderful novelist. Maybe now I'm ready to hold my politically correct nose and give him a try.

GuiltyFeat Read this over 20 years ago when I received it as a present. The only thing I remember is meh. 8y
Angelala007 Yes @shawnmooney, but he was our sexist snob - a proud Canadian 🍁 I've only read Fifth Business. I loved it. 8y
