We Came Here to Forget
We Came Here to Forget: A Novel | Andrea Dunlop
From the author of She Regrets Nothing, which BuzzFeed called a sharp, glittering story of wealth, family, and fate, comes a vivid novel about a young Olympic skier who loses everything and escapes to Buenos Aires, where she reinvents herself, meets a colorful group of ex-pats, and is swept off her feet by a mysterious young man with dark secrets of his own. Katie Cleary has always known exactly what she wants: to be the best skier in the world. As a teenager, she leaves her home to live and train full time with her two best friends, all-American brothers Luke and Blair, whose wealthy father has hired the best coaches money can buy. Together, they are the USAs best shot at bringing home Olympic goldas well as a love triangle waiting to happen. But as the upward trajectory of Katies elite skiing career nears its zenith, a terrifying truth about her sister becomes impossible to ignoreone that will lay ruin not only to Katies career but to her family and her relationship with Luke and Blair. With her life shattered and nothing left to lose, Katie flees the snowy mountainsides of home for Buenos Aires. There, she reinvents herself as Liz Sullivan, and meets a colorful group of ex-pats and the alluring, charismatic Gianluca Fortunado, a tango teacher with secrets of his own. This beautiful city, with its dark history and wild promise, seems like the perfect refuge, but can she really outrun her demons? Told in alternating chapters, Katie grows up, falls in love, and races down the highest peaks on the planetwhile Liz is reborn, falls into lust, and sinks into the underground tango scene at the bottom of the world. From the moneyed ski chalets of the American West to the dimly lit milongas of Argentina, We Came Here to Forget explores what it means to dream, to desire, to achieveand whats left behind after it all disappears.

A good story but had I realized it was about a woman with Munchausens I'd likely have skipped it. The portions in Buenos Aires were very good & Dunlop's writing didn't disappoint.

This is first book I have read by Andrea Dunlop, and I am now going to go back to her backlist. I am not sure how I missed this book, but it 100% in my wheelhouse as this is family drama to it‘s core.

Sometimes I have trouble with split perspectives (past and present) and that happened here. I was ON BOARD for the past perspective, but not so much for the present.

I had to finish it to find out what happened, but I felt this fell short of what I was hoping for.

If I needed/wanted to run away, Buenos Aires is where I‘d run too. Interesting preface but took a little to long to get to what “it” was, which made it not feel quite as bad as it should have. I liked her time in BA and her skiing history but the rest was too drawn out. I like it but not 5 stars worth.

Beautiful cover for what I am sure some will find as a beautiful story, but I struggled with this one. Katie (Liz) has a traumatic event happen that is somehow related to her sister but it takes most of the book before we figure out exactly what that is.
While I liked parts of her story &thought it well written, I didn‘t really care for Katie &after so many chapters of not finding out what happened with her sister, I stopped caring about that too.
