The Mummies of Ürümchi | E. J. W. Barber
Pickpick

Why so many editions of this on Litsy? Argh.

It's an interesting read, focusing on the mummies found in an area salty desert, in Chinese territory. The mummies themselves look Caucasian and were buried with textile grave goods, all surprisingly and beautifully preserved by the salty desert. The book discusses the mummies links with European culture and technology, with a lot of focus on those textiles. It's a fascinating and convincing approach.

TimSpalding We're working on the editions problem, I promise. 6y

This is actually to a very large degree about the textiles buried with mummies from this area. Interesting stuff, and especially for it to crop up unexpectedly just while I'm on a fabric/embroidery reading spree.

This pic is unrelated, it's just cute -- Breakfast sat on my shoulder today, probably from when we were watching the Scotland-Wales game. #BunniesofLitsy

shanaqui @Bklover Hulk, Biscuit and Eclair would all object to that statement! (I say the cutest bunny in the world is always the one I'm holding.) 6y

shanaqui @Bklover They all send back snuffly-wuffly curious kisses! @Clare-Dragonfly Yes, he is a Good Cute Boy. He was like that on my shoulder for about 80% of the whole Wales-Scotland game, and did not mind my whooping and shouting one bit. 6y

an enjoyable read. while i was initially disappointed that the observations were from a museum trip rather than excavation or lab conservation work, the amount of research and information in later chapters more than made up for it. barber visits a distant museum in central asia to examine rare mummies with even more rare surviving textiles.
