“Pirates wear long scraggly
beards on their chins.
Pirates wear smirks
with immense evil grins.“

I would use this book as an intro to a fun drama activity where the students could be pirates!
This was such a cute book of poems! It's a good change of content for children and pirates is something they can act out.
I really enjoyed this poetry book because the rhyming flowed well and just read naturally. Also, the images do a fantastic job of enhancing the poetry and making the words come to life.
I would use this in my future classroom because the poems are lively, whimsical, and fun for children to follow along with.
“It's best to yell, and blessed to smell“
“It's best to yell,
and blessed to smell“
I would use this in my classroom for a fun light lesson about poetry. The children will love the adventure these poems can take you as a pirate.
This was a very enjoyable poem book. The rhyming in the poems sound natural and flows very well throughout the collection. The imagery does a good job of keeping it fun and engaging.
“Don't take a bath, avoid all math“ I think this is a funny quote kids will enjoy.
I'd definitely include this in my library because it is a very unique book, you don't see a poem book all about pirates everyday.
“Shiver Me Timbers!: Pirate Poems and Paintings“ by Douglas Florian, 2012. This poetry book is all about pirates and what they do. This will appeal to kids because the subject matter is right up their alley. The language is very pirate like. It also rhymes which makes it easier for children to follow along.
A perfect representation to show young ones that poetry can be a lot of fun.
This book is full of very funny and fun poems. The poem that I read was the pirate's code of conduct. the poem had a simple rhythm and the pattern wasn't very advanced either but it is full of jokes so it is perfect for the little ones.
Book was great. The way in which the stories are being told through the poems makes it easy for children who are starting out with poems to understand and become familiar with the layout and meaning of poems.
This book has a great usage of rhythm that is like a song, but also just the common rhythm of poems. Aside from that, the illustrations are fun and colorful so the reader stays engaged and is able to see what some of the objects look like.
Rule of the Pirate
“Licensed pirate: privateer.
Ruthless pirate: buccaneer.
Aim of the pirate: commandeer
Rule of the pirate: have no fear.“
I would use this book in my classroom because it is a fun way to strike up conversation and it might be of interest to students, which then I can incorporate into my lesson plans.
Shiver Me Timbers!:Pirate Poems & Paintings written by Douglas Florian. This book is full of poems about pirates, like their language, the food they eat, etc. This book is fun and appropriate for kids. The book/ poems rhyme naturally which makes it more interesting and enjoyable for kids to read. The rhythm of the poem reinforces the information provided in the poems.
I think I would use this poetry book in my future classroom, because it uses multiple kinds of poetry and represents it well. It also is very creative and if I were ever to teach about pirates I could use this.
This poem uses repetition by starting every line with “Hiring Pirates“. It also uses stereotypical pirate sayings and lingo as well has imagery of what pirates do adn look like.
“Hiring Pirates: to sail the nations
Hiring Pirates: without paid vacations“
RULE OF THE PIRATE
Licensed pirate: pirvateer
Ruthless pirate: buccaneer
Aim of the pirate: comandeer
Rule of the pirate: have no fear.
This book would be great in a kindergarten to third grade classroom. I would use this in a ocean life unit. The way these poems get read out almost sound like tongue twisters. The illustrations are really bright and bold which makes a perfect read a loud.
This is a collection of really silly and fun poems. Most of these poems have a consistent rhythm. In some poems, every word on a line rhymes. These poems teach children how to become pirates, how to look like a pirate and even how to talk like a pirate. The rhythm is very nicely flowing and some poems are even lyrical!
This will have kids in the classroom rolling with laughter! Images like this are throughout the books!
Published in 2012, this is a great poetry book as it has many different variations and also plays in with fantasy by including pirates. Sure to keep kids in the classroom attentive.
“ aim of the pirate: commandeer. Rule of the pirate: have no fear.”
The book uses playful and colorful illustrations to accompany the creative poems.
This book is a pirate poetry collection by a master poet and a lively artist that make a great combination. The poems are nicely organized by pirate theme and great to use for young readers in schools and libraries.
Days of boring life at sea a pirate's life is not for me
