Meh. These Disney novels that accompany the live-action movies are just ok. Kiddo begged for this one ages ago and then never read it, but then I needed an Aladdin retelling for SRP bingo, so there you go.

Too much modern stuff - Jasmine wants “a seat at the table” and talking about self-worth - it all took me out of the context of the story. To be fair - I loathed the live-action remake of Aladdin, so I‘m predisposed not to like this book.

Pickpick

So fun and such an enjoyment, especially after seeing the new movie. During the carpet ride, Aladdin & Jasmine travel to the kingdom of Ababwa (the fictional kingdom that the Genie said Aladdin was prince of). Such a neat addition to the movie and a wonderful adventure that adds even more depth to Aladdin & Jasmine‘s relationship. It IS important to see the new movie to get the most out of this book.

After seeing the new Aladdin last night, I went on a search to find Aladdin retellings, and found this new gem! The live action movie deals with more politics and whatnot than the animated version, and it looks like Disney got an awesome writer to expand upon the universe of the new movie! Sooooo excited! This is next in line in my #24B4Monday TBR 😍😍😍

Thanks to #partner @NetGalley for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. The book releases on April 2.⠀

I requested Aisha Saeed‘s novel for two reasons: (1) I absolutely adored her #ownvoices novel Amal Unbound, which was a 2018 Global Read Aloud selections, and (2) Aladdin is one of my favorite Disney movies ever. I can‘t count how often my best friend and I watched that film.
