The Recess Queen
The Recess Queen | Alexis O'neill
8 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
A fresh & original twist on the common issue of bullying. Kids will relate, & parents & teachers will appreciate the story's deft handling of conflict resolution (which happens w/o adult intervention) Mean Jean was Recess Queen and nobody said any different. Nobody swung until Mean Jean swung. Nobody kicked until Mean Jean kicked. Nobody bounced until Mean Jean bounced. If kids ever crossed her, she'd push 'em and smoosh 'em lollapaloosh 'em, hammer 'em, slammer 'em kitz and kajammer 'em. Until a new kid came to school! With her irrepressible spirit, the new girl dethrones the reigning recess bully by becoming her friend in this infectious playground romp.

This tells a story about a playground bully who makes all of her classmates feel intimidated. Its a good book to read and talk about if there are problems with bullying on the playground. Someone unknowingly breaks the recess queen‘s rules and makes a new friend and makes the playground more fun for everyone.

The pictures that the illustrator used really emphasize that mean jean is a bully they make her look unfriendly.

This book is a good book, where mean jean takes over! The author uses punctuation and font sizing to really add effect into this book. The theme of standing up for others in this book is super important because all children need to know how to.

Talk about a perfect first day of school book! The Recess Queen by Alexis O‘Neill and illustrated by Laura Huliska-Beith is a RF PB. The theme of this book is kindness and friendship. The ending is very heartwarming. I love this story and would use it as a first day of school RA. #LAE3414Sp19
