The Mountain Shadow
The Mountain Shadow | Gregory David Roberts
The first glimpse of the sea on Marine Drive filled my heart, if not my head. I turned away from the red shadow. I stopped thinking of that pyramid of killers, and Sanjay's improvidence. I stopped thinking about my own part in the madness. And I rode, with my friends, into the end of everything. Shantaram introduced millions of readers to a cast of unforgettable characters through Lin, an Australian fugitive, working as a passport forger for a branch of the Bombay mafia. In The Mountain Shadow, the long-awaited sequel, Lin must find his way in a Bombay run by a different generation of mafia dons, playing by a different set of rules. It has been two years since the events in Shantaram, and since Lin lost two people he had come to love: his father figure, Khaderbhai, and his soul mate, Karla, married to a handsome Indian media tycoon. Lin returns from a smuggling trip to a city that seems to have changed too much, too soon. Many of his old friends are long gone, the new mafia leadership has become entangled in increasingly violent and dangerous intrigues, and a fabled holy man challenges everything that Lin thought he'd learned about love and life. But Lin can't leave the Island City: Karla, and a fatal promise, won't let him go.

779 pages. Great start of the year with a continuation of Shantaram. Recommended for everyone wanting to get to know India's everyday culture better and looking for a philosophic adventure book!

Obey your instincts to create and love and learn. Obey the universal laws of consciousness, that everything you think or say or do has an effect greater than zero, even if it‘s only an effect on yourself, which is why you must try to minimise the negative in what you think and say and do, and maximise the positive. Obey the instinct to forgive, and share with others. Obey your faith. And obey your heart. Your heart will never lie to you.

After waiting and waiting for the release of the english audio version I realized that there probably simply won‘t be one ☹️ I was immensly impressed by #humphreybower‘s work at adapting Shantaram, but now I‘ll have 33hrs to give the german translation and narration a try...

Everything is a spiritual language, noble thinker, but simply on a higher / lower frequency of connection.
This discourse that we share is but one of many.
If there is a God, and a spiritual language that connects us to God, then by definition it's the only language of purpose, simply expressed in different ways. Much of the human world is an example.
Settle into a patient understanding of younger men & take a forgiving breath. https://v.gd/gFEuC4

I went on my library website to see if they had the audio for Shantaram and guess what I found? Shantaram has a sequel!! It's almost 900 pages too, so I won't get to it this year, but it's nice to know it's out there when I want to visit Bombay again. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m going to let Shantaram sit on its own for awhile before I delve into this one. I‘m feeling squeamish after reading a few of the more negative reviews. 6y
RebelReader @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m not even done with Shantaram yet so I guess I shouldn‘t get ahead of myself. Sequels are sometimes disappointing when you love the first one. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Haha. Right. Just focus on the one you‘re on. (As if I ever do that ...) ♥️ 6y

Hold everything! I‘ve just discovered there‘s a sequel to Shantaram! 😱🙈 How have I missed this?!

kishore_kk Didn't know that before now. Wanted to read Shantaram for long but haven't read yet. Now I have to read both. 6y

"Love has no power, because it can only be freely given... Power influences or directs people or processes," Idriss said. "Power is a measure of control, and it is always connected to authority. Power is fear, submitting to greed. There is no fear and there is no greed in love, just as there is no authority or control, which is why it is beyond illusions of power."
