Gitanjali | Rabindranath Tagore
post image

Tagore was the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was Bengali, with roots in what are now #India and #Bangladesh. Gitanjali is a collection of spiritual poems written in Bengali, and translated by the author himself into a style of English that takes some getting used to, but it is worth it.

A quick browse of a thrift store secured me this copy of this book. Only later did I realize that it is an UNCORRECTED PROOF. 🤔🤩 Only in the beginning stages and curious to see where this story will go, but thought I would share. Anyone read this before? Impressions? Thoughts? #currentlyreading #thriftscore

Beautifully written novel telling the story of a wealthy woman, Sera and her slum dwelling servant, Bhima. Together for many years the women have shared an unusual closeness that almost transcends their socioeconomic differences. The tenuousness of their relationship is revealed when an unjust accusation is leveled against one of them. A 4.5 ⭐️ for this hauntingly sad and lovely tale.

“Astha was brought up properly, as befits a woman, with large supplements of fear. One slip might find her alone, vulnerable and unprotected. The infinite ways in which she could be harmed were not specified, but Astha absorbed them through her skin, and ever after was drawn to the safe and secure.”This excellent opening paragraph just gets more excellent. Can't recommend enough.

If I could rate this book infinite stars, I would.THe opening lines of Emily WIlson's translation of 'THe Odyssey', “Tell me, O Muse, of a complicated man“would not go amiss as an epigraph for this.Read if it you're not a fan of Kipling(I wasn't,I'm now a devotee),or if you're a fan.

I‘ve really fallen behind in logging my reads - again! Enjoyed this window into a place, time, situation.. I really hope their journey to the big city worked out, but I suspect it won‘t be all fame and money. Val was so frustrating!

Good family drama book. I just felt that the love triangle was over dramatized. Lots of characters and back stories to keep the plot moving, but some parts didn‘t hit perfectly for me. Loved the setting, vibrancy of Kolkata.

Retelling of the world's longest epic poem known to mankind, Mahabharata, from Draupadi's POV, the wife of 5 Pandavas. I have always loved Mahabharata and so just expected a LOT from this book. And just breaks my heart to say that I was quite disappointed. I do not get the hype for it. A strong no for someone getting to know the Indian culture or the epic. Please go for the English translation of the original epic.

I‘m 20 years into my fascination of movies and books set in India. (It started when my 12yo daughter and I discovered Netflix Bollywood dvds.). I‘m humbled by the culture, history, and religions so unknown to me. Reading Shalini discover Kashmir was interesting and heartbreaking. Heartbreaking because we are not all built with the intestinal fortitude to become the person we truly want to be.
