Just finished listening to the #audiobook as preparation for seeing the live performance at #EdinburghInternationalFestival later this August 😍 Stephen Fry is obviously charming, witty and wise in this casual retelling and i can't wait to see the man himself conducting an evening of story-telling. We have tickets for MYTHOS: Men, though there will also be MYTHOS: Heroes & MYTHOS: Gods performances.

Something between a PICK and a SO-SO i think i will have to let this one settle a little. I really enjoyed the language and setting. Constructed as a clash of intellectual concepts at a pivotal time in european history, it did feel a little instringend at times. I'll definately be looking up some background info, for i'm sure i either(probably) didn't fully get it OR there really were some overshot efforts made that could have been edited better..

Nice to have finished this tale of #exile on an island. I can totally understand why this mythical #autobiography got hyped ao much: ir is awesome! It's a unique retwlling of a classical saga while still exciting and surprising. Somehow Miller was able to make a goddess/nymph witch on a lonely island into an extremely relatable protagonist meditating on womanhood and mankind. A must read.

Such a brilliant book that takes us into the ascetic life of an abandoned girl in a south american marshland growing into womanhood her own way. I haven't felt for a protagonist that fondly in a long time. A great case study of how society defines their outsiders, of the relationship between humans and nature, of images of masculinity, and a chance to travel into a land that doesn't exist anymore.

I was lucky to have listened to this as an #audiobook because the narrators vernacular adds such a wonderful level to the so very specific local athmosphere of ("southern") Ireland during The Troubles. A horrifying ecosytem of peer pressure, political (in)agency and chauvinist oppression contrasted with the great empathy and observational skills we get to experience by riding along our protagonists most personal thoughts.

Another disappointment, even worse than Into the Water. The culprit super obvious, way too many voices trying to add their superflous perspectives, and yet again the motto of "All men are basterds, all women meant well but fucked up". As average TV-mystery this might work, but holds no more content than a 90min flick. #dontbelievethehype

Super disappointed by this. This was a very shallow, very forced mystery with one-dimensional protagonists and the quintessence "all men are basterds, all women mean well but do harm". Also there were quite a few questionable choices by the audiobook narrators. #dontbelievethehype

I finally took time to finish this snarky dystopian novel. An (epistolary) love letter to the written word, a lament on western civilisation and a meditation on the timelesness of the human condition. Philip Roth meets Margaret Atwood. Very ambitious, but maybe a future classic. Read this if you want a glimspe into our capitalist future!

It was super obvious who'd be the bad guys here, but still like a car crash the emotional cruelty was so fascinating you just couldn't look/hear away. Gillian Flynn once again gives a unique perspective on misconseptions of the female psyche, motherhood and feminism with another visit to suburban America. Holy hell, people are fucked up! Watched the #adaptation with my mom yesterday, after we both read the novel. It was okay, though they shortened the ending. Also the "bad guy" was super likable in the film, which made it a little weird. The book definately was more #bookish, but adapting an epistolary novel on screen ain't too easy, so I don't blame them. Additional plus: michiel huisman ??

This was a pefect example of "the idea was good, but too ambitious". Nice characters, interesting plotlines, some cheeky meta comments, but all together Simmons couldn't make it work. This was good for falling asleep with, since there was so much going on that missing a few minutes didn't hurt.

Short: ➿The nanny has an affair with her boss, then his wife burns down the house.➿

Long: ➿So this poor girl gets a job as a nanny and gets seduced by her boss (fyi: he sometimes wears drag). Then she finds out he's already married, but after his wife burns down the house they get hitched anyways. She also sees a lot of ghosts and wins the lottery. The end.➿
