Fossil
Fossil | Bill Thomson
8 posts | 3 read
When a boy and his dog go for a hike, the boy trips on a fossil, and it comes to life, revealing an ancient plant. The boy is so intrigued that he breaks two more fossils that come to life--a dragonfly and a pteranodon. When these prehistoric creatures collide with present reality, the boy must figure out a way to make things go back to normal. Visually told through art, this "wordless story" will surely spark imagination and creativity.

Fossil | Bill Thomson

"A fossil shows the traces or remains of animals and plants that lived 10,000 or more years ago. A fossil can be a rock with a preserved part of an extinct animal or the imprint of an ancient plant. By studying fossils, we can learn a lot about prehistoric life."

Because of the wordless element of this book, teachers can prompt student engagement by asking students to describe what they think is happening in the story.

The hyper-realistic illustrations and creative perspectives add excitement to the book. Aside from a page explaining fossils, the story is completely wordless. The story still went in an unexpected and imaginative direction!

#DearDecember Day 16: The story opens with a full spread image of a young boy walking by the beach with his beautiful dog. Since most fantabulous discoveries happen by chance or #serendipity, this good-looking young boy tripped, which broke the rock he was holding, revealing something within. My favorite part of this book was when the little boy destroyed the fossil that the Pterodactyl came out of in order to make the Pterodactyl “vanish”.

This is a book that can get get children‘s imaginations going since there is no text included. However, I like how at the beginning of the book, the author includes a “side note” about what exactly fossils are. For children who do not know what fossils are, this is a really important and useful part of the book to have.

Genre: Historical Fiction
I like this book because it tells a story strictly from pictures and no text. The pictures are broken up into different segments to tell the story.
