#BlackHistoryMonth Recommendations Day10 Fiction
I have been seeing Kindred all over BookTok lately and I am thrilled that a new generation is finding Octavia E Butler. I think this shirt story collection is the best place to start if you are interested in reading her writing. The storylines are impactful and varied. The queen of sci-fi/fantasy

CuriousG She is one of my favourite writers! I'm not a huge sci-fi person, but everything she wrote has immediately sucked me in. 1y

A sci fi classic short story , showing symbiosis between humans and an insect like species which can only survive by implanting its eggs in humans. The humans need support of the alien species to survive away from earth.
It is grotesquely visceral and I found the theme difficult to understand initially.

I don't like scifi but I can make an exception for Octavia Butler and Ursula Le Guin.

So I was glad I didn‘t eat during lunch today when I read the first short story, Bloodchild. It‘s about how humans pay rent on another planet where we‘re kept on a Preserve, and bonded with this wormlike species who is all to eager to give us sterilized eggs to suck on to enter hallucinatory dreams. The main character, a boy, is promised to an alien worm who in the middle of the story basically helps a man give birth to alien worm children by👇🏼

Meeko93 Woah what in the world! 4y
Reggie stinging him to sedate him and then removing the larvae and putting it into the carcass of another animal she had the boy slaughter for this purpose. I‘m sensationalizing it because I almost threw up my sprite while reading it but Octavia is a sheer genius on how she talks about consent and what being in a partnership is all about. Her notes at the end show how smart she was . The fly in the picture is where she got her inspiration from. It‘s a 4y
Reggie botfly which is an insect who lays their eggs in the openings of other insect bites. She learned about these before she went to Peru to go to a rain forest to do research for other books of hers. I‘m pumped for all the other stories in her collection. 4y
Reggie @Meeko93 It was awesome!!! 4y

This past week's #litereads pick for the #halloweenreads #octoberreads season (our final as part of our spooky fall reads) was Bloodchild by Octavia E. Butler. This scifi modern classic story is a fascinating read that deals with an alien culture, pregnancy, love, and coming of age. I definitely enjoyed it, and you can read my full review in the link below. elizabethlk Apologies for being behind schedule, my health has been especially disagreeable recently. I'm hopeful that everything should stay back in the Sunday-Saturday schedule after this. 4y

Our new #litereads pick, and the final #octoberreads pick, is Bloodchild by Octavia E. Butler. Published in the 80s, it tells the story of a colony of humans working closely with an insect-like alien race, including hosting their eggs. This gruesome award-winning science fiction story can be read or listened to online for free, and you can find links in our full introductory post linked below.
