The Opposite of Drowning
The Opposite of Drowning | Racheline Maltese, Erin McRae
8 posts | 2 read
Harry Sargent hates his job in publishing, his life in New York City, and his motley collection of disreputable best friends. Making everything worse? He's about to turn 50 and has a crush on the much-younger woman his company just hired to move them into the digital age. At 27, Elizabeth Anne Abgral loves her job, her life, and maybe even her fiancé. But no one can have it all, and as long as she does everything her old-fashioned, high-society New England family expects of her, she'll probably be happy. Right?! But when she meets a handsome – and mischievous – older man at her new job, that illusion shatters. As she and Harry bicker their way through industry events around the world, Elizabeth finds herself tossing rationality – and her plans – to the wind. But just because Harry has long wished his life were different, doesn’t mean he’s ready to risk his heart on a passion that frightens him… or a peculiar young woman with the uncanny ability to make cities flood every time they kiss.

I didn‘t add anything to my spending log in March because I didn‘t buy anything*! Go me!

I also managed to read all my outstanding 2020 purchases last month, ending with the phenomenal THE OPPOSITE OF DROWNING. (Best desperation buy ever.) It‘s mighty nice to see all those check marks in my log.

*I did order one book to take advantage of Chapters‘s free shipping offer, but it hasn‘t arrived yet so I‘m gonna count it as an April purchase.

ju.ca.no Yay! I always fail at not buying anything new😂 5y
TheSpineView I'm impressed with your restraint! 🤩 5y

I missed the last #weeklyforecast because I was busy with 24 In 48, but I‘m back!

I‘m currently reading the tagged book. Once I‘ve finished it, I‘ll give Hudson Lin a try, then satisfy my Michelle West craving.

I‘m not sure whether I‘ll read HOUSE NAME straight through or tackle it in 150-page chunks. The route I take will determine whether I read anything but these three prose works and this thick manga omnibus next week.

Cranberry macaroon loaf for breakfast, dotted with honey butter that got left in the fridge.

I‘m now 140 pages into THE OPPOSITE OF DROWNING and I‘m totally in love with it. It‘s great to know McRae & Maltese aren‘t a one-series writing team, so far as my tastes go. I always worry about that when I adore something as much as I adore their Love In Los Angeles books.

I‘m 60 pages into THE OPPOSITE OF DROWNING and I think I‘m gonna love it. It‘s personable and angsty and weird and possibly sweet. Good combination there.

Well, the moment I feared is here—I didn‘t buy enough books quickly enough, and $10 of my Google Play credit expired. (I got it from doing surveys, not from loading my own money; hence the expiration date.) I didn‘t want to risk losing what was left, so I quickly bought an early Courtney Milan novel and a McRae & Maltese standalone.

So much for not adding to La TBR this month.

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Both of these are on my TBR too! 5y

This book took us over three years to write and we‘re so happy it‘s finally out in the world!

Pickpick

A very acceptable romance wherein a 50-y-o pretty well-off man and his 25-y-o similarly well-off coworker, I believe both white, fall for each other. (If that squicks you out, this one isn‘t for you.) I‘d have liked Eliza to have more friends and Harry‘s friends not to have dropped away from the plot halfway through the book, but otherwise the obstacle-filled Path to True Love was a quick, enjoyable read. #romance

I always preorder the books that Erin McRae and Racheline Maltese (the latter of whose work I started to read because of Tremontaine) create, even when I‘m not necessarily sold on the premise. I did not regret that with Queen from the North, and I have hopes that this will be similar (not the same, and not the same as THE SEQUEL TO QUEEN THAT I‘M WAITING FOR).
