Caravans: A Novel of Afghanistan | James A. Michener
14 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
First published in 1963, James A. Micheners gripping chronicle of the social and political landscape of Afghanistan is more relevant now than ever. Combining fact with riveting adventure and intrigue, Michener follows a military man tasked, in the years after World War II, with a dangerous assignment: finding and returning a young American woman living in Afghanistan to her distraught family after she suddenly and mysteriously disappears. A timeless tale of love and emotional drama set against the backdrop of one of the most important countries in the world today, Caravans captures the tension of the postwar period, the sweep of Afghanistans remarkable history, and the inescapable allure of the past. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Hawaii. Praise for Caravans Brilliant . . . an extraordinary novel . . . This book was really interesting. Unlike many of Michener's books which span centuries, this one took place entirely in 1946. I learned a lot about the geography and culture of Afghanistan at this time.

More Michener! This is an interesting story set in #Afghanistan after WWII. Nonetheless he also managed to weave in several elements of the country‘s history. #Augustisatrip

This enchanting song from the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald has nothing to do with the book except for a similar title, but I include it for your listening pleasure. https://youtu.be/5O_ICpYMUds

The lure of a well told story about far off places, especially when filled with danger, mystery, & romance, is hard to resist. Michener easily transports the reader to Afghanistan just after WWII in telling the story of an American military man charged with discovering what happened to a young American woman who has gone missing. I enjoyed the book, appreciate the research that went into it (like all his books) & now really want to travel!✈️🌎✈️

Nope, ideas about the city I live in haven‘t changed that much over time...

Al Capone casts a long shadow.

And the race is on to finish this book before we leave for vacation. Should go quickly. Michener has a way of pulling you into the story he‘s telling.

AmyG I love his books. 6y
Jabberwocky I tried Mexico by him and was not impressed. Would either of you have suggestions for a second try? @AmyG 6y
TracyReadsBooks @jabberwocky Like all good students of archaeology, I read The Source before diving into my first excavation in Israel—it was a thing. I remember enjoying it for the most part, maybe a little long but a good read. I also read & enjoyed The Covenant about South Africa. That being said, I read them a long, long time ago (think early 90s). I‘m enjoying this one, it‘s about 300 pages so on the shorter side, & maybe this is a good place to start. 6y
AmyG @Jabberwocky I loved The Drifters. Try that one. 6y

You never know what road you‘ll find yourself on and what sort of adventure you might encounter...

I remember driving on a narrow, semi-paved road in Israel once and passing a sign that said, more or less, “Do not stray from road. Landmines.”

Needless to say, we did not stray from the road.

TracyReadsBooks @RaimeyGallant So many places to visit! Where to go first, that‘s the question!?! 6y
RaimeyGallant I've never been to Asia. Let's go to Singapore, because I hear that's a good base to fly out of to different locales. 6y
TracyReadsBooks @RaimeyGallant Ooooh, Singapore. I have a feeling Michener might approve! 6y

My eye was a little restless as it roamed over my TBR pile. I‘m getting a sense that The House of Impossible Beauties is going to be a tough act to follow. Fingers crossed this book does the trick.

dsfisher I remember really enjoying this one. 6y

While talking about Long Way Down with another member of my book club we wandered down a long, convoluted path full of twists & turns & maybe even a switchback or two which ultimately saw us find our way to James Michener (whose son-in-law used to live across the street). From there we decided why read 1 book club book—next up Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda—when you can read 2? So we‘re also reading a short Michener, 320 pages, because why not?

emtobiasz I had no idea Michener wrote anything so short! 6y
