Accomplished home chef though he might be, Shiro proceeds on the assumption that no two of his curries will ever taste the same.

Whoa! Kenji and Shiro go shopping together for rings in this episode! Shiro is inching his way slowly out of the closet while continuing to whip up elaborate meals to deal with his stress. The cliffhanger ending had me immediately placing the next volume on hold at the library… and not just because of the promise of upcoming recipes for steamed dumplings, sesame -dressed bok choy, & asparagus in white sauce. #LGBTQ #translation

Strong flames [high heat]; paprikas [bell peppers or capsicums]; shrooms [mushrooms]; nub [clove] of garlic; husked [shelled] green peas; a laurel [bay leaf]. I have to keep translating to different English terms in my head, but that doesn‘t dampen my enjoyment of watching what Shiro cooks.

Banana cake made with pancake mix—interesting. Shiro is proud that he didn‘t have to buy baking powder and used a thrifty alternative instead: “The expiration date for the pancake mix I bought on sale was getting close.”

When I was in Japan, I found the curried dishes distinctly different from any curry I‘d tasted before. Caramelized onions, miso, honey and Worcestershire sauce might explain that. Like Shiro, however, my South Asian-style dishes never turn out the same way twice, even dal, which I make every other week.

Centique Oh yum I love dal. I love the way the cooking is illustrated here too. 5y
Lindy @Centique It‘s another slice-of-life series to add to your list. 😊 5y

“2/3 of a stick of half-mooned carrots” — Does this mean 2/3 of a carrot? If so, what size of carrot? Are all carrots the same size in Tokyo grocery stores? Or is it 2/3 of a stick measurement, a chopstick, perhaps? Anyone have ideas about this?
#weirdtranslation #cookinglesson

ReadingEnvy Just guessing but I would say a typical large carrot, cut into half moons, only use 2/3. 5y
Lindy @ReadingEnvy That‘s my first guess too. Elsewhere, Shiro uses “1/3 of a clove of garlic.” Thirds are an unfamiliar way of measuring carrots and garlic. 5y
wildwoodreads This made me think of a sweet potato pie recipe that I got from my great grandmother. In the recipe it says, “Enough potatoes to do two pies.” I have no idea what that means. 😂 5y

Lindy @megzlynn 🤪 In the cookbook I‘m currently reading the author has translated vague family recipes into measurements. She says (of 4 lbs potatoes for perogy filling): “Peel your potatoes as thinly as possible. Make sure you get as much potato as you can. I learned this thanks to many scoldings over the years regarding my too-thick peels.” in 5y
CarolynM I'm always amused by the recipes that call for "a handful" of something - huge variations are possible! 5y
Lindy @CarolynM Those kinds of measurements are for intrepid cooks. 😊 5y
