A Bitter Truth: A Bess Crawford Mystery | Charles Todd
5 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
Highly recommendedwell-rounded, believable characters, a multi-layered plot solidly based on human nature, all authentically set in the England of 1917an outstanding and riveting read. New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens Bess Crawford is a strong and likable character. Washington Times Already deservedly lauded for the superb historical crime novels featuring shell-shocked Scotland Yard inspector Ian Rutledge (A Lonely Death, A Pale Horse et al), acclaimed author Charles Todd upped the ante by introducing readers to a wonderful new series protagonist, World War One battlefield nurse Bess Crawford. Featured for a third time in A Bitter Truth, Bess reaches out to help an abused and frightened young woman, only to discover that no good deed ever goes unpunished when the good Samaritan nurse finds herself falsely accused of murder. A terrific follow up to Todds A Duty to the Dead and An Impartial Witness, A Bitter Truth is another thrilling and evocative mystery from one of the most respected writers in the genre (Denver Post) and a treat for fans of Elizabeth George, Anne Perry, Martha Grimes, and Jacqueline Winspear.

Well, Grandpa has been in the hospital a week, but the silver lining is all the reading time...

I'm afraid I am very behind on all my #LitsyLove so if you have sent me a letter recently, rest assured that I haven't forgotten you!!

This book is another solid addition to the series. I really like the main character and the WWI setting a lot.

TheBookHippie No worries about the mail. Sending love. Grandpas are such special people. 5y

I'm just devouring this series. These books should appeal to those who like Rhys Bowen or Maisie Dobbs mysteries.

Once again I find the characters and the setting as or more engrossing than the mystery. A wonderful read.

I sometimes think that Bess is too caring for her own good. This time she gets caught up in a family's set of secrets when returning to London for a short respite, she finds a strange young woman with a black eye huddled on her doorstep. Offering the gal some shelter turns into her traveling to a country home with the young woman to face her family. Secrets come to light, family members behave badly, and it all bounces between England and France.

Enjoyed this third in series as well. I must say that Bess has the patience of a saint in dealing with some of the irritating characters she comes across. Good plot, further character development, and now I MUST sleep. 😳 I‘ll start the next one after some rest. 😊

Karylahn Looks interesting- what's the first in the series?😊 7y
