In the case of bright, funny and socially ambitious Evelyn Beegan, the answer is much too far...At 26, Evelyn is determined to carve her own path in life and free herself from the influence of her social-climbing mother, who propelled her through prep school and onto New York's glamorous Upper East Side. Evelyn has long felt like an outsider to her privileged peers, but when she gets a job at a social network aimed at the elite, she's forced to embrace them.Recruiting new members for the site, Evelyn steps into a promised land of Adirondack camps, Newport cottages and Southampton clubs thick with socialites and Wall Streeters. Despite herself, Evelyn finds the lure of belonging intoxicating, and starts trying to pass as old money herself. Hi, my name is Kristy and I don't know how to quit on a book 🙋🏼 This was one of those books I just couldn't get into. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it (but since it was a $1 secondhand bookstore find, I can't complain 🤷🏼‍♀️)

I'm at the part where I hate the main character (but I do dig the book)

I enjoyed this modern rendering of the kind of novels Edith Wharton wrote. Since women today have so many more economic opportunities than the females of Wharton's tales, many may find the protagonist's behaviors unfathomable, but I found the portrayal of the seductions of wealth and privilege fairly convincing.

I started this book a year ago and set it aside and now I remember why. The vicarious shame caused be the protagonist, with her social climbing and lying as she desperately tries to make a spot for herself on the Manhattan social scene, is excruciating. (The Germans have a brilliant word for it: fremdschämen.) While I like books with unlikeable characters, so much of this was ridiculously unbelievable and impacted a potentially good story.

Bibliogeekery Great picture! 8y

Holland Saltsman at Novel Neighbor in St. Louis posing next to Everybody Rise, a big book from last fall. She's brand-new to bookselling, but look what she's already done: "We have repurposed art classes, monthly cocktail classes, and book-themed birthday parties. If a book club wants to stay & drink wine until midnight, I just let them have the events room in the back and they let themselves out when they're done." #getindie #novelneighbor

I'm cleaning out my closet and found this audiobook. The design of the CDs (and cover) matched the story so well. This book gave me a financial panic attack for the main character. I was definitely in there with her. I also love Katherine Kellgren. Good stuff all around.

Michreads I couldn't get into it. It was dull. Maybe because there was so much hype about it... It really fell short for me. 9y
LitHousewife My greatest fear is to become massively in debt. Once that part of the storyline was in place, I had to see it through. I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone. 9y
Megabooks I bailed, but I'm glad you enjoyed it! 9y
LitHousewife @Ebooksandcooks @Michreads I checked after I reviewed. I'm definitely in the minority on this one. The audiobook helped, I'm sure. 9y

I had such high expectations for this book, and I was rather unfortunately disappointed. I liked it at first but it got repetitive and overall I feel like the story went nowhere. 5.5/10, probably wouldn't read again.

overlyattachedreader I wasn't a huge fan of this either. I was so bored! 9y
