Playing for the Ashes
Playing for the Ashes | Elizabeth George
4 posts | 15 read | 1 to read
"The story begins with my father, actually, and the fact that I'm the one who's answerable for his death. It was not my first crime, as you will see, but it is the one my mother couldn't forgive." In her astonishing New York Times bestseller, acclaimed author Elizabeth George reveals the even darker truth behind this startling confession. Playing for the Ashes is a rich tale of passion, murder and love in which Inspector Thomas Lynley and Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers once again find themselves embroiled in a case where nothing--and no one--is really what it seems. Intense, suspenseful and brilliantly written, Playing for the Ashes will make readers "search out the sleuthing pair's first six adventures...a treasure," as Cosmopolitan predicted in their review. From the Paperback edition.

A good one to get me out of a reading funk I seem to have wandered into. Elizabeth George can usually pull me out!

I've been floundering around with my reading. Nothing is sticking. I've stated and stopped 4 books already. Today I searched and searched to see what might be what I'm looking for to fill this emptiness... Years ago I was given the suggestion of Elizabeth George to pull me from my slump back then. So I decided to try one that I haven't read yet since she is always great at pulling me out of my slump.

Annl I always have an Elizabeth George book on the go. Her books are my “comfort reading”. 7mo

#ashestoashes was a difficult prompt for me, since my husband is away at the moment and so is unable to provide me with any background on the song 😕 Elizabeth George's 7th Inspector Lynley novel was the first book that came to mind, if only because it has ashes in the title - although the Ashes in this case refers to a cricket series. #SeptemBowie

DGRachel I think this is the last of the series that I attempted to read. For some reason, I struggled with this one, my mom got ahead of me reading/buying the books and the title of one that came a few books later was actually a major plot spoiler that made me so angry I refused to continue the series. 😱😂 2y
Melissa_J @DGRachel I think I know which one you mean. I stopped at the book right before that one - With No One As Witness - I didn't like the direction George decided to take Lynley's story in. 2y
Cinfhen It sounds so good from the blurb.... 2y

DGRachel @Melissa_J I'm glad I'm not the only one! @Cinfhen The early books in the series were really good. I just didn't like the direction things were headed and objected enough to quit the series. My mom quit it a book or two after the one I didn't name. 2y
Melissa_J @Cinfhen I really liked the series up until the 12th book, so if this one interests you I say definitely give the series a try. The first book is 2y
Cinfhen Thanks for the info...I'm not ready to commit to a series! #committmentphobia 😘😘 2y
Andrew65 This is one series I need to get to! 2y

#funphotofriday I'm not a big sports lover, I've never played sport & the only sport I've watched has been soccer, coz my kids played and rugby league. So the only book about sport I could find, other than quidditch, is this Inspector Lynley novel about a famous English cricketer who gets murdered. Best I could do I'm afraid, nerd from birth, that's me.

[DELETED] 2232195534 Oh but this is a good book! Seems perfect to me! 😀 3y
JulieAnn Love this series! 3y
Lizpixie @kaysreadinglife @JulieAnn I know right, I have the whole series. It's just the only book I have that only even tangentially touches upon a sport. I was always the girl who had a note for P.E, the only time I played was neighbourhood cricket on the road with a garbage can as stumps.🤓 3y
Stephanie-Anne Books about quidditch 😸 3y
SusanInTiburon This is a really good book! 3y
