I needed this book. I haven‘t been reading much recently and I keep having to take breaks from the news but at the same time I feel guilty when I do as I need to be informed on things.
This book covers how the constant negative coverage of events by the media affects us. This is a call for constructive journalism, this doesn‘t mean not covering the bad stuff or just giving us fluffy good vibe news stories.

Weaponxgirl This is about covering the stories that give us solutions and what things are going well with the same standards of good journalism used when covering more negative stories from responsible media. 5y
Weaponxgirl It also has suggestions on how to consume media consciously so as to get the most from it. I was quite happy to see how much I was already doing but it has given me a push to look at what I‘m consuming and how. If the media is getting on top of you I would happily recommend this one. It‘s made me feel a tiny bit better and able to carry on, I‘m also going to link to some stuff I like 5y
Weaponxgirl https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/aug/14/why-tiny-belize-is-a-world-l... this is the sort of story I am looking for at the moment. It doesn‘t gloss over problems but it isn‘t just doom and gloom and made me have hope in the world 5y

Weaponxgirl I have also started reading resurgence magazine and permaculture magazine again. These keep me informed but don‘t just make me feel helpless along with ethical consumer. What we read can shape us and I don‘t want the cynic in me to be too strong right now, it‘s not a helpful state for me right now. 5y
Bookwomble I totally get what you're saying. I have a headache right now from reading the news! 5y
Weaponxgirl @Bookwomble I laughed at the news for the first time in ages the other day! Brexit is a shitshow and I‘m not a fan of Theresa May but her and ken Clark laughing at boris in parliament was actually quite delightful and a whole mood. 5y
Weaponxgirl @Bookwomble but overall recently the news has not been good on my mental state and I felt this book got the balance right. I had a few quibbles but mostly I liked what she was saying and the focus on reading reliable fact checked journalism was good. 5y
Bookwomble Johnson wants to make his mark on history, which to be fair he had done by being the first Prime Minister to lose his initial three parliamentary votes. It's funny, but like when you laugh at hitting yourself in the face with a hammer 🤣🔨 5y
Weaponxgirl @Bookwomble I know! 😆 tbf I am one of those people who laughs at everything so it‘s hard to know what I‘m feeling sometimes. I‘m in pain, I‘m uncomfortable, nervous....I‘m laughing in all those situations and I‘m sure I look like an asshole sometimes because of my inability to contain my giggles 5y
Bookwomble Giggles keep us going - *that's* a genuine British value 😊 5y
GingerAntics I love this entire conversation. I need this book, too. 5y
SW-T The article on Belize was interesting and balanced. Thanks for posting it 😊 5y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics I thought you might like it, it made me more able to cope with the insanity around me. 5y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T thanks, I thought it would be good to show what I was talking about. This particular article when I read it left me hopeful but not complacent in how hard things are. I think having this sort of viewpoint helps stop people like me from feeling helpless. 5y
GingerAntics It is getting crazier by the hour, it seems. 5y
