6 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
In Imaginary Homelands, Salman Rushdie presents ten years worth of concentrated thought on topics from the most cherished literary traditions and authors of India, Europe, and America to the politics of oppression, the joy of film and television, and the enduring value of the imagination. Writing with lively and intelligent insightfrom the provocative, to the humorous, to the deeply profoundRushdie demonstrates why he is celebrated as one of our greatest literary minds.

“But human beings do not perceive things whole; we are not gods but wounded creatures, cracked lenses, capable only of fractured perceptions. Partial beings, in all the senses of that phrase.
Meaning is a shaky edifice we build out of scraps, dogmas, childhood injuries, newspaper articles, chance remarks, old films, small victories, people hated, people loved;⬇️

TheBookHippie perhaps it is because our sense of what is the case is constructed from such inadequate materials that we defend it so fiercely, even to the death." 8mo

I don't always agree with him, but I do know he is well known to be a decent human who wrote his words with passion, which should be all our right to do. To have been attacked as he has, has left me stunned for a few days. I am hoping he recovers. Such a brave unassuming man by all reports. He caused me to think, and gave me pause. Forever grateful for that.

“He‘s a good man and a brilliant one and I hope he‘s okay,“ the author Neil Gaiman said.

kspenmoll Thank you for this. Stunned my household as well. 2y
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll Honestly anymore you‘re afraid to speak period. It‘s abhorrent. What have we become. 2y
UwannaPublishme Shocked and stunned here too. What is this world coming to... 2y

mcctrish I grew up going to church and I admit that when I first heard of him and his books/stand/platform? I was a bit perplexed, naïvely thinking all religion was for good ??? now I‘m old and think we need more SR 2y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish ah youth 🤣 We definitely need more. People need to question or their blind sheep. Clearly 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
KT1432 I love this quote. I was actually in a very cultish church in my young adult days and we were definitely taught not to question anything. Religion absolutely needs criticism. The fact that he was attacked over a book just further proves that smh. 2y
TheBookHippie @lele1432 I so agree! 2y

“Go for broke. Always try and do too much. Dispense with safety nets. Take a deep breath before you begin talking. Aim for the stars. Keep grinning. Be bloody-minded. Argue with the world. And never forget that writing is as close as we get to keeping a hold on the thousand and one things--childhood, certainties, cities, doubts, dreams, instants, phrases, parents, loves--that go on slipping , like sand, through our fingers.”

#QuotsySept18 Day 30: #Translation is bearing language across; and as such, “we are translated men.” Rushdie.
