An engaging, engrossing debut.Greer Macallister, USA Today bestselling author of The Magicians Lie Bound for a new continent, and a new beginning. In her illuminating debut novel, Aimie K. Runyan masterfully blends fact and fiction to explore the founding of New France through the experiences of three young women who, in 1667, answer Louis XIVs call and journey to the Canadian colony. They are known as the filles du roi, or Kings Daughtersyoung women who leave prosperous France for an uncertain future across the Atlantic. Their duty is to marry and bring forth a new generation of loyal citizens. Each prospective bride has her reason for leavingpoverty, family rejection, a broken engagement. Despite their different backgrounds, Rose, Nicole, and Elisabeth all believe that marriage to a stranger is their best, perhaps only, chance of happiness. Once in Quebec, Elisabeth quickly accepts baker Gilbert Beaumont, who wants a business partner as well as a wife. Nicole, a farmers daughter from Rouen, marries a charming officer who promises comfort and security. Scarred by her traumatic past, Rose decides to take holy vows rather than marry. Yet no matter how carefully she chooses, each will be tested by hardship and heartbreaking lossand sustained by the strength found in their uncommon friendship, and the precarious freedom offered by their new home. An absorbing adventure with heart.Jennifer Laam, author of The Secret Daughter of the Tsar

Great fictional story based on “Les Filles du Roi”, French women who were sent to the colony of New France (now Quebec, Canada) to marry settlers and fortify the population in this new land in the 1660s. This books tells the story of three women and how they forged a life despite the many hardships. Although fictional, the characters felt real and the historical basis is very interesting.

MsMelissa You might like this one if you‘re interested in reading more historical fiction based on the filles du roi 3y
Jaimelire @MsMelissa It does sound good, I will add it to my list. Thanks 3y

I love books featuring strong women. I love books that feature women who advocate for and support one another. This book had that in spades. Even the nuns who sheltered the women were strong willed.

I found the book to be well researched and I thought the characters were well rounded. Their individual stories weren't without trial and tribulation, but each was able to find a life for herself and each was able to overcome individual struggles.

I loved how the author pulls the reader into the story. She described well the many ways the New France was hard in women. Child birth, marriage and just getting through each day with a full stomach and a warm house. A great read for anyone who loves historical fiction!
