I love her writing and this story is intriguing and full of memorable characters. Ng has a way of developing characters through the most ordinary things - the rip in a jacket, the way their hair falls over their eyes, - the ordinary becomes extraordinary and memorable. Truly a rare time that I refer to a novel as having "rich prose". Loved the narration.

Wow - unforgettable story based on true historical events. Loved the narration. Definitely disturbing with child abuse but such great characters. I researched the story behind this and got upset all over again.

Wow! Talk about evocative writing. Loved this one as first in the series. Tough yet touching. Excellent audiobook. I kept picturing my grandfather a tough little kid from the countryside near Naples!

Unlike a lot of my fellow readers, I found this slow going until the last few hours in audio. Have to confess that the audio of Judah's NY accent was particularly grating. I'm sure I'm in the minority. Audible monthly credit pick.

Reviewsbylola I found the first 2/3 a little slow, mostly because I thought for a very long time that Lo was imagining things. The last third really made up for it though, at least for me. 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings Ditto^ took me a bit to really get into it, but more because Lo was SO annoying and I found her credibility to be lacking so I was frustrated. Ending worked out for me, though. 8y
LitHousewife Beth, that you finished this was better than I could do. I didn't like Lo at all. I was tired of her whining and, quite frankly, was hoping she'd die so she'd shut up about being tired or over-drinking. And yes, the New York accent wasn't good and even then it was inconsistent. 8y

Couldn't put down this book which read like a series of vignettes about a group of high schoolers. It was so realistic and disturbing. Would be a great book club discussion. (Strong language and sexual content). As a parent I just can't stop thinking about the harsh realities portrayed. Net Galley
