Last Call | Tim Powers
5 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
Enchantingly dark and compellingly real, the World Fantasy Award-winning novel Last Call is a masterpiece of magic realism from critically acclaimed author Tim Powers. Set in the gritty, dazzling underworld known as Las Vegas, Last Call tells the story of a one-eyed professional gambler who discovers that he was not the big winner in a long-ago poker game . . . and now must play for the highest stakes ever as he searches for a way to win back his soul.

This is as fabulous as I remembered as when first read! Lost Fisher King, lots of T.S. Eliot, poker played with Tarot cards, ancient archetypes, and a battle for souls set in Las Vegas, a kingdom in the desert created by mobster Bugsy Siegel. In March of 1951, testifying before a Senate Crime Committee, Virginia Hill stated that Siegel had told her the Flamingo Hotel was upside down-though she was able to cast no light on what he might have meant.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

I would give this 2 thumbs up if I could. American Gods (Gaiman) hits Vegas in this page turner. Read in one sitting. Plot driven rather than character driven - not to say the characters aren't fleshed out. If you love magical realism, this book is worth a shot. I was only halfway in when I checked to confirm there is a sequel. I will never look at a deck of cards the same way!
