Concrete
Concrete | Thomas Bernhard
2 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Thomas Bernhard (1931-1989) has been hailed by Gabriel Josipovici as 'Austria's finest postwar writer' and by George Steiner as 'one of the masters of contemporary European fiction.' Faber Finds is proud to reissue a selection of four of Bernhard's finest novels. Concrete (1982) is a brilliant and haunting tale of procrastination, failure, and despair: the story of Rudolph, a Viennese musicologist, who neglects the work he is meant to be producing in favour of this dark and grotesquely funny account of small woes writ large, of profound horrors detailed and rehearsed to the point of distraction: from a meddling sister and a house that he hates, to an 'illness' he carefully nurses, his own very real writer's block, and an 'escape' to Majorca which brings him no release from himself.'Masterful... A book of mysterious dark beauty.' John Rechy, Los Angeles TimesA masterpiece.' New Yorker

Because @vivastory mentioned Bernard I thought I‘d grab mine . I loved Concrete, kept this little volume for years now .picked up Prose from a U of Chicago sale catalog, haven‘t read it yet . It includes 7 stories first published in German in 1967.I believe I also read one of his called Correction.

vivastory That cover of Prose!!! If I recall correctly I read Correction many years ago as well 2y
Leftcoastzen @vivastory I think it is included in the current U of Chicago sale for $7. Of course you will find more items I bet . https://press.uchicago.edu/resource/Sale_catalog.html (edited) 2y

Liz_M Hunh. I did not get on with Wittgenstein's Nephew and have been avoiding the rest of Bernhard's 1001-list books. Have you read WN @vivastory, @Leftcoastzen @BarbaraBB? Would you recommend Extinction, Correction, Concrete, Yes? 2y

Pickpick

It was about time I started reading my first Bernhard. To my surprise it turned out to be an easy read. What's more, I liked it a lot. For example the way Rudolph thinks, the twists in his mind about his sister, his house and Vienna. Bernhard formulates them so easily, yet effectively. Really impressive, as was the unexpected end of this short novel. I wouldn't call it uplifting but certainly recommend it. #1001books Picture: Dining at PureC
