Assume this is art theory in novel form. Do not be intimidated by a lack of paragraphs. Incredibly detailed and researched, this is both a meditation and a study of what it's like to experience and make art.

DreesReads I tried to read this with a goodreads group and couldn't make it to page 25. I have taken several art classes (middle school, grad school, university extension, Getty class for the public) and I was pretty much told the same thing each time--I create and interpret art incorrectly. Including my own. Now I know why I couldn't read this! 8y

Genrebending @AudreyMorris I honestly don't know what it means to create and interpret art 'incorrectly'. I feel that this book is either love it or hate it because of its style, so I don't think it says anything about anyone's ability to experience art. Go forth and art! :) 8y

DreesReads @Genrebending I don't understand either, but when you are told to draw a pic of a clown (from imagination) and then graded down because the use is wrong, or when asked what a certain piece of art means to you and upon answering are told that since it clearly means XX you cannot feel Y, is what I mean. This is the same reason I became a history major rather than an English major. I do not understand how there can be one correct interpretation. 8y

readinginthedark @AudreyMorris I was an English major and found that my professors never expected certain interpretations of literature in college the way they did in lower grades. Usually the opposite, actually; they encouraged us to come up with completely new interpretations for the potential of groundbreaking scholarly potential. đźŠ 8y
