4 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
Set in Norway and Iceland at the beginning of the 11th century, "Gunnar's Daughter" tells the story of a beautiful, spoiled young woman who, after being raped by the man she had wanted to love, raises the child conceived in violence. Alone she rebuilds her life and restores her family's honor--until an unremitting social code propels her to take the action that again destroys her happiness.

"Do you promise me to go northward?" asked Veterlide. Ljot gave him the promise, and when he had left the neighborhood, Veterlide sailed for Iceland. He parted from Gunnar in a most friendly fashion and they gave each other rich gifts; to Vigdis he gave a golden brooch and a mirror of Southern workmanship; she bestowed on him at parting an embroidered cloak of red silk.

Pickpick

Interested in reading Undset, but reading her Nobel prize winning 3vol. Kristin Lavransdatter seemed a daunting place to start. Her shorter historical novel ,152 pgs.would give me a taste.Set at the beginning of the 11th century,Vigdis (Gunnar‘s Daughter)is raped by a man she could have loved .She tackles adversity head on in this violent & unpredictable time ,a strong female heroine to root for.Published in 1909,often Game of Thrones like.👍❤️

Tamra Intriguing, especially since so few novels are set in this time period. 6y
Leftcoastzen @Tamra I know, very few set during this time. The Penguin has a great intro about Undset and her studies of the different time periods.I found it very enjoyable to read. 6y

AlaMich I read Kristin and really enjoyed it, although it was a bit slow at times. But I would recommend it. Just make sure you get the Tiina Nunnally translation (it‘s the newer one). 6y
Leftcoastzen @AlaMich Thanks for the tip! 6y
LeahBergen I have this on my shelf. I loved Kristin Lavransdatter. 6y

batsy Very cool, thanks! I would also like to ease in to get work and this short novel sounds so interesting. 6y
ValerieAndBooks I‘ve read the Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy, but not this — will have to keep my eyes open for it. 6y
Suet624 I‘ve read K. Lavransdatter twice. Loved it. A little trivia: Sigrid, Willa Cather and my great-aunt were close friends. 6y
