Every time Nolan closes his eyes, he doesn't see darkness. Instead, he's transported into the mind of Amara, a girl living in a different world. Nolan's world is our world, full of history tests, family problems, and laundry; his parents think he has epilepsy, judging from his frequent blackouts. Amara's world is full of magic and danger, and she's a mute slave girl who's tasked with protecting a renegade princess. Nolan is only an observer in Amara's world--until he's not. At first, Amara is terrified by this new presence controlling her. But they eventually learn that the only way to protect the princess and escape danger is to work together. A fascinating premise, clearly and compellingly written and imagined by a startlingly original debut writer.

True fear is the kind you can‘t reason away. It makes you want to puke. To do anything, except face—whatever it is you fear. And every time you think of it, even for a flash, part of you panics.

Reading made every trip outside into something more, like strangers talking to her, words and connections wherever she looked. The world had been so empty before.

3/5⭐ I enjoyed the character diversity & experience reqding, but the ending didn't pay off. I didn't buy the romance between Cilla & Amara, or the problematic power dynamic; it seemed to exist solely to make the plot move the way it did in the end rather than on its own merits. The way the magic worked confused me. The ending didn't wrap things up to my satisfaction. I did especially like Nolan's relationship with his sister. #projectnew

I really enjoyed this book. Great representation (bi and disability), and great world building.
