The Three Kingdoms, Volume 1: The Sacred Oath
The Three Kingdoms, Volume 1: The Sacred Oath: The Epic Chinese Tale of Loyalty and War in a Dynamic New Translation | Luo Guanzhong
5 posts | 2 read | 2 reading | 7 to read
This exciting new translation with footnotes will appeal to modern readers who find the twists and turns of Game of Thrones so compelling. The Three Kingdoms is an epic Chinese novel written over six centuries ago. It recounts in vivid historical detail the turbulent years at the close of the Han Dynasty, when China broke into three competing kingdoms and over half the population were either killed or driven from their homes. Part myth, part fact, readers will experience the loyalty and treachery, the brotherhood and rivalry of China's legendary heroes and villains during the most tumultuous period in Chinese history. Considered the greatest work in classic Chinese literature, The Three Kingdoms is read by millions throughout Asia today. Seen not just as a great work of art, many Chinese view it as a guide to success in life and business as well as a work that offers great moral clarity—while many foreigners read it to gain insights into Chinese society and culture. From the saga of The Three Kingdoms, readers will learn how great warriors motivate their troops and enhance their influence, while disguising their weaknesses and turning the strengths of others against them.

Finally getting around to posting my May #BookSpinBingo card. This will be a busy month, so books longer than 400 pgs were split into two entries. Also, the book I was 2/3 done with, The Thre Kingdoms, got a spot so it is also the first one finished.

Seems like an appropriate day to start this Chinese classic.
#currently reading #readjanuary

It is considered to be one of the four great classics novels of Chinese literature.

JenP @jlseymour3 is this the same sentence in your volume? I have a different edition and the fact that it has a grammar mistake in the first sentence is bothering me 8y
jlseymour3 @JenP not quite. I've seen three or four versions of the first sentence and I have to say I prefer the Moss Roberts: The empire, long divided, must unite; long united, must divide. 8y
JenP @jlseymour3 thanks. My edition became unreadable. I'm returning it to Amazon bc of all the typos and grammatical issues. I ordered the Moss translation and I think the edition you have (she has two editions) based on your photo. I will join in with you when I get the new book 8y

Starting a book and there being four pages of characters? I'm rather concerned at my ability to keep up.

Lindseyastin That seems the hardest! 9y
kammartinez *cackles* Not only is it four pages of Dramatis Personae, but each of those characters has a formal name, a "use name", and an epithet. It's an amazing story though, and you get used to all the names eventually XD. 9y
becausekafka Daunting! 9y
