This is highly unpleasant reading. I‘m trying to finish off a reading challenge (a-z) and select short books so I can make my goal by end of year. I‘m actually not sure I can make it through this. 150+ pages inside the mind of a sexual predator and psychopath with very vivid imagery. I feel like I need a shower

BarbaraBB Somehow I am intrigued. What does that say about me? 2w
JenP @BarbaraBB hahaha, it‘s very short. You can try it and tell me what you think 2w
JenP @BarbaraBB also I‘ll add that one of my favorite things about Oates is her ability to thoroughly inhabit her characters. She‘s a great writer and wholly convincing. Unfortunately this character is horrible - based off of Dahmer 2w

intothehallofbooks I read this too, a while back, after asking Litsy to share some recommendations for shocking stories. I remember being horrified as I read, and also really shocked by how believably the author portrayed the killer. 2w

I need help. Doing a book swap with friends from work and I got matched with someone who has opposite tastes to me. Her favorite genres are psychological thrillers, mystery, and romance. Favorite authors: Alex michaelides, Frida McFaddon, Ruth Ware, Riley Sager, Kristin Hannah. She disliked non-fiction and long books. She is not a fan of literary fiction.

Any recommendations for what to get her?

JenP When she told her husband one of my listed favorites was Atwood, he laughed and said that she probably wouldn‘t make it 10 pages in to an Atwood book 😱 2w
Bookwormjillk Hmmm that‘s a tough one. Do you have time to go to a store and browse? I feel like those types of books have a certain look so you would be able to find one that looks fun on the shelves. 2w
squirrelbrain I saw this author speak at a Crime Festival and read the book. It was just OK for me (I read the same as you, as you know! 😉) but might be good for her and not that well-known so she may not have read it. (If it‘s available in the US) (edited) 2w

JenP @Bookwormjillk I do. And they do have a look, you‘re right 2w

Poore‘s writing style reminds me of Tom Robbins who I used to love when I was in my early 20s. This book is quirky/goody/funny. Not great literary fiction or particularly deep/profound but I found it entertaining to read. Protagonist, Milo has living 9,995 lives in his attempt to achieve perfection and he has 5 chances left before dissolving into nothing. Suzie is his great love and happens to be death. For a book about death, it‘s pretty funny.

A series of delightfully creepy interconnected ghost stories. I really enjoyed this collection. I‘m normally not a huge fan of short stories but these stories were all connected through the main character who works overnights at a research institute for haunted things. Each chapter highlights the story behind one of the institute‘s objects (a cat, a handkerchief, some sheep). It was creepy but also endearing

The Refugees | Viet Thanh Nguyen
post image

My partner and I are reading the refugees for our shared read this month. I‘m listening to the audio (authors really shouldn‘t read their own books) and I go to Goodreads to update my “currently reading” and see that I‘ve already read it. I have zero recollection of reading it. ZERO. I think, Goodreads must be wrong. And then I checked Litsy. Read and reviewed 😂😂😂

Ruthiella It happens! 😂 Also I agree , most authors should not read their own books. Exceptions are David Sedaris and the now disgraced Neil Gaiman. 1mo

Two “rival” graduate students descend into hell to rescue their advisor in order to get their letters of recommendation. Although I really liked the concept and found some of the pieces of academia very accurate, it took me forever to finish it and I realized that I just wasn‘t that excited to read it. I did find several parts pretty funny and I liked the literary references but it dragged a bit too much.

I‘m not a huge reader of non-fiction and when I do read non-fiction, I tend to prefer books that read like stories rather than a list of facts. This was not a book that read like a story so I struggled to stay engaged. I did learn a fair amount about a subject for which had zero knowledge.

This was Jan‘s pick for our partner read this month (little known history) although which it was little known to me, it‘s not an obscure topic.

This book deserves all the accolades it received beautifully written, emotional, and thought provoking.

Protagonist Zelu is a disabled Nigerian American author who experiences a wild climb to fame (with her novel about robots) which comes with its consequences. So I think if I had read this book at any other time, I would have really liked it. This book reminded me of like a British version of Franzen‘s novels. It was a Dickensian portrayal London post-brexit, rife with politics, corruption, hypocrisy. I normally enjoy books that dig into these topics but it hit too close to home and I‘m frankly exhausted by everything that is going on in my own country. So I found it hard and unpleasant to read

I went to Barnes and noble to buy the new Okorafor which they didn‘t have 😭. How is it they don‘t have it in store but I can buy 500 copies of fourth wing? 😑

I was annoyed but I left with three other books.

Pickpick

Debut novel about a small Welsh island community right before World War II. This was one of the books I had predicted would make the booker last year (I was wrong). Quiet novel about island life that is beautifully written. Fairly similar to The Colony. Story follows 18-yo Manood who is conflicted between traditions of her community and desire for modernization on the mainland.

charl08 I loved this one so much. Looking forward to seeing what she writes next. 11mo
BarbaraBB I loved The Colony so I guess I should try this one as well? 11mo

Pickpick

Libraries, jazz, literary references, ambiguity, cats. A very Murakami-esque novel but not one of my favorites. If you love his writing you will probably appreciate it. But some of the themes, reality vs dreams, consciousness, loneliness, love etc are tackled in better ways in his other novels.

3.5 stars. First read of 2025

BarbaraBB That‘s too bad. He used to be so good 11mo
JenP @BarbaraBB I did still enjoy it but just not as much as some of his other works 11mo
BarbaraBB I already felt that way about 11mo

sarahbarnes Bummer, I was excited about this one. Agree with @BarbaraBB that I miss reading his earlier works. Although I did like IQ84. 11mo
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes I liked it too, I read them in three parts soon after their publication. Maybe that‘s why I was a bit disappointed by the ending, I had been anticipating it for a long time. 11mo
JenP @sarahbarnes I think it‘s still worth reading. If you liked his earlier works. It was fun picking up on the references and nods to other works. And I still found it to be an enjoyable read and a large part of it centers around a library so I did love that 11mo

rpr007 Hard-Boiled Wonderland is a good one to pair with this book. It explains the walled city in more depth. 10mo
