6 posts | 12 read | 2 to read
Set amid the beauty and decadence of the Ottoman Empire, Lady Emily's latest adventure is full of intrigue, treachery, and romance. Looking forward to the joys of connubial bliss, newlyweds Lady Emily and Colin Hargreaves, diplomats of the British Empire, set out toward Turkey for an exotic honeymoon. But on their first night in the city, a harem girl is found murdered, strangled in the courtyard of the Sultan's lavish Topkapi Palace. Sir Richard St. Clare, an Englishman who works at the embassy in Constantinople, is present and recognizes the girl as his own daughter who was kidnapped twenty years earlier. Emily and Colin promise the heartbroken father that they'll find her killer, but as the investigation gains speed, they find that appearance can be deceivingespecially within the confines of the seraglio As a woman, Emily is given access to the forbidden world of the harem and quickly discovers that its mysterious, sheltered walls offer no protection from a ruthless murderer. As the number of victims grows, Emily must rely on her own sharp wis in a heart-stopping finale if she is to stop a killer bend on exacting vengeance no matter how many innocent lives he leaves in his wake.

It took me a while to get into this and then I read two-thirds almost in one go! I didn't love Emily's attitude to the people of Constantinople, and the plot with her potential pregnancy reminded me a lot of Mary Robinette Kowal's Glamour in Glass, which threw me off... but I did enjoy it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 The 4th book in Tasha Alexander‘s Lady Emily series, this was a fun and quick read for anyone who likes Historical Fiction with a Murder Mystery thrown in. This wasn‘t my favorite of the series so far, I think because I‘m not as familiar with the setting (Constantinople during the Victorian era). But it was still enjoyable and I plan to continue the series. #bookreview #historicalmurdermystery

My favorite reading companion. We got this sweet puppy, Leialoha (or Leia as we call her), on New Year‘s Day when she was 8 weeks old. She‘s been the best little addition to our family. She loves to keep me company while I read (or do anything really). Do you have a furry reading partner?

ju.ca.no How cute😍 my parents have a dog and a cat and my former roommate has two cats- but I just moved in with my boyfriend and we don‘t have enough space for a fur baby😢 I really miss having one around though! 5y
JenniferTapler @ju.ca.no our house is crazy!! We have 4 cats, a tortoise, and now this sweet puppy!! The animals outnumber the humans - me, my husband, and my son. 😂 5y
ju.ca.no @JenniferTapler that sounds lovely😍😍 I hope we‘ll soon get a bigger place so that I can finally get cats again😅 5y

#currentlyreading Settling into something light and fun after my last read! This is the 4th installment in Tasha Alexander‘s Lady Emily Mysteries series and I really enjoyed the 1st 3! Strong female main character who becomes an accidental detective in Victorian England. Quick and easy read - perfect after something heavy. #britlit
