#BookReview - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - just meh for me. I don‘t know. This was a Book Club read for me this month and I wasn‘t excited about it when I started. Maybe because I had already watched the HBO documentary? I think it was well written, but the timeline was all over the place. Probably better to read before watching the documentary.

Goals - #outstandingoctober #readathon (tomorrow) and #october20in4 (starts today). Half through White Teeth and LOVE it! Seriously, if you‘ve never read it, it‘s a must-read so far. Then my book club October read - I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark. And something new and fun if time. Thanks @Andrew65 and @Bookgoil

Bookgoil Lots of interesting reads! Enjoy! 4y
Andrew65 Great to have you with us, good luck 😊👍 4y
Andrew65 Heard positive things about Bruno, Chief of Police. Will be interested to hear what you think of it. 4y
JenniferTapler @Andrew65 that‘s good to hear! It came up as a suggestion for me on Audible, which I mostly use for non-fiction. I do like easy, fun mystery series and thought I‘d give this a try. Still making my way through a Tasha Alexander series and a Susan Elua MacNeal series - enjoy both of them when I need a break from heavier reads. 4y
Andrew65 @JenniferTapler Those light mystery series do offer a good break. I‘m enjoying Hamish MacBeth by M C Beaton and Inspector Montalbano by Andrea Camilleri. 4y

#bookreview ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Basically the Princess Margaret parts of The Crown in a book with an additional character of a Lady-in-Waiting. But I love The Crown and didn‘t mind at all reading the same stories from the Lady-in-Waiting‘s perspective. #royalfamily #anglophilia

#bookreview ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I do like Kolker‘s writing style, but for me, this one focused a bit too much on background story. I‘m sure that was the point and these women do deserve to have their stories told. However, I typically read True Crime because I want more about the actual crime - the investigation, the forensics, and the serial killer stuff. I felt this one was lacking a lot of that.

#bookreview ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This one had a slow start for me but picked up a little over a quarter of the way through I‘d say. Not my favorite topic but the characters were intriguing. Started out as a two star but ended with a strong four star, although I didn‘t love the ending.

#bookreview ⭐️ I really wanted to like this, but just couldn‘t get into it. It felt like it lacked a plot - just an unhappy, entitled narrator sponging off of his parents. I kept waiting for it to go somewhere and finally gave up about 80% in, so I don‘t know if it improved after that? I did enjoy the early 80s pop culture references.

Aloha! It‘s been several months since I‘ve posted. Life got crazy. Summer was hard. Beaches and parks were closed, and everything was still pretty much locked down here in Hawaii. My son had been home, cooped up in the house since early March. I was placed on Admin Leave at work (Physical Therapist) in August and have been home since, likely losing my job. But this sweet puppy, Leia, keeps me smiling! I‘ve missed this place! Catch-up posts coming!

Andrew65 Great to have you back with us. Been a very tough year! 4y
erzascarletbookgasm Great you can drop in again. Litsy has given me cheer and kept me distracted during this tough time. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Welcome back! My pup definitely kept me sane during lockdown. I was working from home but he made certain I was outside for a walk 2-3 times a day. It was a good excuse to explore my neighborhood. 4y

#bookreview - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - this was my 2nd book read during the #24b4monday #readalong and it was a good pick for the challenge - a quick read with lots of twists. The main plot outcome was somewhat predictable, but all the twisty turns to get there were more unexpected. A lot of complicated plot lines, but easy to follow. I liked this better than Jewell‘s The Family Upstairs. Now I‘m sure I‘ll read more of her.

BeansPage Thank you for the review. I have wanted to read this book for some time now. I'm going to have to figure out how to get my hands on it. 😊 5y

#BookReview - ⭐️⭐️💫 - finished my 1st book for #24b4monday late last night. This one had so much potential to be a great book for me, but just fell short. It had good bones and good characters, but the whole thing just felt rushed and lacking the extra background detail to make it really good.

It‘s lunchtime in Hawaii and I‘ve only read a little over 2 hours so far for this #24b4monday. I‘m starting with The Widow of Rose House, and hoping to finish it today. So far, it‘s just OK. As a healthcare provider during this times of crisis, I have been feeling much more stressed than normal lately and was looking forward to a weekend of reading and relaxing. Finding it hard to focus. Still, the rest is and distraction is needed and good.

It‘s Day 1 of the #BFC28 Challenge! I‘m excited to participate and plan to read 7 books in the next 28 days! That‘s a lofty goal for me, but my job in healthcare (Physical Therapist) is changing a lot in the next few weeks, so I may have extra time on my hands 😥 I‘ve also set a goal to meditate daily and get outside for a daily walk (weather and isolation rules permitting). Looking forward to sharing this journey with the rest of you! #BFC

ElizaMarie Looks like we have very similar goals. I love this!

Do you think you will work from home or just have extended time off? Or just a ton of downtime where you can read at work?

Good luck! I'm looking forward to your posts here!

JenniferTapler @ElizaMarie right now we‘re not seeing patients in person, but just calling them and checking in. We‘re trying to get video telehealth set up, (I work for Kaiser), but getting that going for physicians first is a priority. Once we get that, we may work from home. For now, I expect a lot of downtime in the clinic. 5y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - It took me awhile to get through this #middlegrademarch #readalong, I think because it was just so emotionally charged. I‘m making my 8th grader read this. 4 stars only because I think I‘m just not a huge fan of middle grade writing. I do recommend this for all tweens and teens!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I enjoyed this. Likable narrator with some heavy themes for middle grades (women‘s rights, mental illness, emotional abuse / manipulation). Several strong female characters that fight back against the patriarchy of the 1920s - very subtle girl power book. #MiddleGradeMarch

I finally gave up. The story has good bones. I wanted to like it, but couldn‘t get past the horrible editing. Historical inaccuracies are a pet peeve with me and this is FULL of them - set in the 1940s UK, children swear frequently (unlikely), she uses too many modern American terms (like sweater instead of jumper), upper middle class children talk back to / question their teachers, etc. I just couldn‘t buy into it. Moving on for #MiddleGradeMarch

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘d rate this higher (because I did enjoy it) but I felt some of the historical facts were glossed over. Such as the deep involvement of the US government in the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and Monarchy, and imprisonment of the Queen. I did enjoy the story of Laura and came to love (and loathe) many of the characters. Recommend for a fictionalized White-washed intro to how Hawaii became part of the US. #LMPBC #bookreview
