The Adventurer's Guide to Successful Escapes
The Adventurer's Guide to Successful Escapes | Wade Albert White
8 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
A thrilling debut novel where fantasy and science fiction meet, dragons aren't as innocent as they look, and nothing is quite what it seems. Anne has spent most of her thirteen years dreaming of the day she and her best friend Penelope will finally leave Saint Lupin's Institute for Perpetually Wicked and Hideously Unattractive Children. When the big day arrives, a series of very curious happenings lead to Anne being charged with an epic quest. Anne, Penelope, and new questing partner Hiro have only days to travel to strange new locales, solve myriad riddles, and triumph over monstrous foes--or face the horrible consequences. Packed with action, humor, and endless heart, this debut novel marks the first volume in an irresistible and original fantasy series.

1 - Tagged book.
2 - I am trying to not concentrate on the numbers. I almost hit 200 books in 2020 and I didn't in the end when I discovered how few favourite reads came from the second half of the year. It was like I was forcing myself and I didn't like that.
3 - Nothing yet! Whole 3 days of no book purchases. lol

Operation, try and use Litsy in 2021... We will see how that goes!

The first read of the year is this middle grade fantasy novel. I got it because a friend recommended it because the author is local. I didn't connect with it when I tried it before, but I am enjoying middle grade more and this time it clicked. I wouldn't say I loved it, but it was fun and I will enjoy reading the sequels.

Recommended!

Zany, very funny mixture of styles, with the characters (beautifully ethnically diverse, which is no big deal) plunged into a quest adventure which is in itself self-aware, complete with characters wandering in and saying "I'm the official antagonist," or, "I'm carrying the betrayer's card." If you love role playing board games, you'll love it, likewise if you are a fan of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Three thirteen-year-olds set out to complete an impossibly difficult quest armed with only a sarcastic sparrow, a wooden sword, and a knack for accidentally causing minor explosions. What could possibly go wrong? (Spoiler alert: Everything. Literally everything goes wrong.) This has easily been my favorite ARC so far.
