Sometimes a Great Notion
Sometimes a Great Notion | Ken Kesey
The magnificent second novel from the legendary author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Following the astonishing success of his first novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ken Kesey wrote what Charles Bowden calls "one of the few essential books written by an American in the last half century." This wild-spirited tale tells of a bitter strike that rages through a small lumber town along the Oregon coast. Bucking that strike out of sheer cussedness are the Stampers. Out of the Stamper family's rivalries and betrayals Ken Kesey has crafted a novel with the mythic impact of Greek tragedy.

“The job of the writer is to kiss no ass, no matter how big and holy and white and tempting and powerful.“

Remembering Ken Kesey on his birthday.

Two weeks ago Matt walked under a ladder, and the next day Peter had a kidney stone attack and Matt developed nerve pain. Coincidence? Maybe. So after a couple weeks of recovery we're back! And we're discussing a fantastic American classic, Sometimes A Great Notion by Ken Kesey. Join us as we dissect the indelible Stamper family and go into what makes this a classic. High recommend from us both. Enjoy!

Sprawling and occasionally bewildering novel which centres on the uneasy relationship between two brothers in an Oregon logging community. Not an easy read but most definitely rewarding if you stick with it.

SamAnne Oh, one of my favorites. I grew up in that country. The first few descriptive chapters completely capture the natural world and community I lived in. I‘m planning a reread this year. And while it has its cheesy aspects, the old movie starring Paul Newman is a pretty good tear jerker! 4y

@Kdgordon88 I never made it to Crater Lake when we lived out west, but it looks lovely. Thanks! Kesey is now on my TBR.

"For what profit hath a man of all his labor which he taketh under the sun if the trees and the brush and the moss strive everlastingly to take it back?" (Kesey 25).

One great thing about participating in these monthly Litsy challenges, is how many books you discover!
This book sounds amazing. Not so much summary of the story, but the reviews describing the characters within the story

The title is from 'Goodnight Irene' by Led Belly:

??"Sometimes I live in the country
Sometimes I live in town
Sometimes I have a great notion
To jump in the river and drown"??

RealLifeReading Oh! I didn't know it's from a song! Cool! 8y
