Pickpick

It was a struggle at times finishing this. The main story and characters were exceptional and kept me going, but the lengthy philosophical tangents Hugo so often took made me at times almost forget what the story was about. 19 pages on “slang“. 15 pages on the “sewers of Paris“. And so many more. Still, the story makes it a worthwhile read. The ending is worth waiting for.

BookNook Hugo would have done to listen to his own critique from page 1175: “The philosophers talk stuff and nonsense. I should like to stuff their philosophy down their gullets again.“ 9h

I read this book slowwww, which definitely hurt my over all interest. I really liked Hayt (Aka Duncan Ghola) and Alia. Even if the jihad is clearly a speeding train of totalitarian religious authoritarianism, it‘s hard to empathize with the conspirators at all. I am not sure if I‘ll read further in the series, but I‘m happy I read this one before another movie is made. #scifi #classic #lessdrythanDuneLITERALLY

Rushworth is just another in a long line of tacky blowhards with no taste destroying much-loved places of natural beauty. "Ye fallen avenues, once more I mourn your fate unmerited." #PemberLittens #JaneAustenThenAndNow

Man, this book is full of selfish, thoughtless people: sisters Bertram and Norris set Fanny off on an emotional roller coaster about her living situation without giving two shits; nobody cares that she doesn't have a horse, ie access to fresh air and exercise; Sir Thomas heads off for a year to his slave plantation; and Henry Crawford comes out the gate as a feckless, self-centered ass who won't house his own sister. Shades of behavior to come...

bookishbitch I just read an interesting article about this book today. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/27/books/review/jane-austen-mansfield-park.html 23h
Andrea313 @bookishbitch I really enjoyed this article! Mansfield Park is an odd one out among Austen's work but I've always really loved it. ❤️ 23h

bookishbitch @Andrea313 I love learning more about the context of her writing. I think it gives it more weight in a manner of speaking. 23h

Enjoying Dickens's writing so far, especially the humor that comes from looking at the adult world through a child's eyes. But I have to say, there's been a lot of instances of crying in these first few chapters... Especially David's mother, Mrs. Peggotty & Mrs. Gummidge. Everyone is bemoaning their treatment or their lot. Just an observation :)

#Pemberlittens I'm already behind on 2 Chapters a Day Readalong of Mansfield Park. Today is my grocery shopping day for 3 day holiday weekend house party. I'm firing up my audiobook read by the fabulous Juliet Stevenson and listening through Chapter 12. That will take me up to Sunday. Monday when things quiet down I go back to print.🛒 🎧 📖

TheBookHippie I‘m starting Monday with a massive catch up day 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ son had oral surgery and it‘s a bit chaotic here🙃 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig Also the Mansfield Park selection on Litsy is sorely lacking. Need to get on my computer and add in my editions. 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie no oral surgery here but still chaotic. 🤪 2d

kspenmoll Mansfield park is one I have not read. Will try & catch up. 2d
Bookwormjillk I think I'm going to read it all in one go. I was trying to do 2 chapters a day on audio, but for whatever reason that doesn't work for me like it does in print. 2d
julieclair Good idea about the audio. I checked #Everand, and was pleased to see it was included in my subscription. I never switched to their new plan, and I‘m finding that many books I want to read are no longer available to me. (edited) 1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @julieclair glad it was there! 1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Bookwormjillk sometimes Juliet Stevenson is too good on audiobook and cringe at particular mean thing Mrs Norris says. 1d
