Of Mice and Men | John Steinbeck

I often heard references to this book, and because of the #authoramonth2023 #johnsteinbeck challenge, I now understand all the buzz. George and Lennie travel to the Salinas Valley in California to work on a ranch during the Great Depression. Lennie is a man of tremendous size, but has the mind of a child. George is small and quick, and does his best to protect his friend. Spare, beautiful writing. Tragic. Unforgettable. #1937 #192025

dabbe When I would show the Gary Sinise-John Malcovich movie version after my juniors read it, you could hear sniffles out in the audience, especially from the teenage boys. And they already had read it and knew what was coming! And this one reads almost like a drama, doesn't it? The dialogue is already beautifully written, and each chapter is a new setting. I love this book. ❣️ 9h
DivineDiana @dabbe I can understand. It is heartbreaking on many levels. 💔 6h
Librarybelle Good choice! This is one I have not read, but definitely a true classic 6h

I haven‘t read this in years and years, but it still has the effect on me that it did then. George and Lenny are friends in a world of migrant workers where no one has friends. There is a lot of fear and sadness and meanness in this one. Although I‘ve read other Steinbeck books, this one always comes to mindfirst.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TheAromaofBooks I read this one last year for the first time. I was really blown away by how much emotion and thoughtfulness Steinbeck was able to pack into such a short story. 1w
Bklover @TheAromaofBooks Yes! For such a short book it‘s very intense! 1w

These are my two reads for #AuthorAMonth. I feel that classics have an advantage over historical fiction in situating the reader in a certain time. Mice in particular was insightful into the conditions of Depression-era work and views on intellectual disability. It‘s my first time reading Steinbeck since high school, and while I enjoyed these, two is enough. 😉 Both were well narrated, especially Gary Sinise performing Mice.

Cinfhen Gary Sinese narratedTravels with Charley, which really elevated my appreciation of Steinbeck‘s writing 1w
Megabooks @Cinfhen I thought about reading that but I think two is enough for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1w
gossamerchild I remember reading Travels with Charley and really liking it, but Mice destroyed me 😆 1w
Megabooks @gossamerchild when they shoot Lenny no differently than they shot the dog, it broke my heart! 1w
gossamerchild @Megabooks have you seen the movie with Gary Sinise? Totally brutal 😭😭 1w

This one has been staring at me for over a week, waiting for me to dive in for @AllDebooks #rereadtheclassics #buddyread (except it‘s a first-time read for me!)

I‘ve been trying to clear the decks a bit by finishing my current chunkster (The Agony and the Ecstasy), but tonight I decided I‘d better get started! I‘m going in. Wish me luck. 😁

TheBookgeekFrau Whoa, that's a really big book 😳 2w
erzascarletbookgasm That looks about 5cm thick! Good luck 🍀💪 2w
HeatherBookNerd It‘s worth it! So so good! 2w

Bklover I think you‘ll enjoy it! The Agony and the Ecstasy is a chunkster too, isn‘t it?! 2w
AllDebooks The agony and the ecstasy is on my list too x 2w
Saknicole Enjoy! I liked the book quite a bit but sometimes a good movie taints my expectations on plot as this one did. Have you seen the movie? Swoon, so good! 2w
BarbaraJean @Bklover So far I‘m parceling it out at 25-30 pages a day, but I enjoyed last night‘s reading so much I‘m sure I‘ll be reading ahead before long! Agony is indeed quite the chunkster—660 pages in my edition! 2w
BarbaraJean @AllDebooks I‘m really enjoying The Agony and the Ecstasy! There are times that the writing feels a bit dated (written in the 1960s, I think), but it‘s fascinating and I keep having to put the book down to go look up pictures of his art as the narrative gets to the creation of each one! 2w
BarbaraJean @Saknicole I have seen the movie! So good! It‘s funny, because my husband tells me my issues with the plot of the movie should be addressed satisfactorily when I read the book 😆 2w
