Former 'street rat' Briar leads a comfortable life at Winding Circle Temple, learning plant magic from Rosethorn. But street kids are still his friends, and when one of them gets sick, she turns to Briar for help. When her disease proves beyond even Rosethorn's power, Briar realises that all of Summersea is in danger. As the mysterious illness spreads, Sandry, Daja and Tris join Briar and their teachers to fight the epidemic. But just as the situation improves, the unthinkable happens. Will Briar be able to save what he loves most?

Y‘all I love this whole quartet so much it hurts sometimes. Briar‘s book, which apart from the plague is mostly about him realizing how much he‘s changed in a year, is such a good way to round out and finish off the first quartet. A lovely sort of ‘we‘ve come so far, how far will we go‘ thought.
I can‘t wait to read the next one (starting tomorrow, when my sister brings me her copy of the first because I‘m missing it).

“Most disasters are fast, and big. You can see everyone else‘s life got overturned when yours did. But plagues isolate people. They shut themselves inside while disease takes a life at a time, day after day. It adds up. Whole cities break under the load of what was lost. People stop trusting each other, because you don‘t know who‘s sick.”
Rosethorns speech here feels much larger these days than it did when I was a child, no less true, but bigger.

Her “”friend”” I‘m so glad in later books she was able to confirm in the text that they‘re partners because like, oh boy did she always make it as clear as she could despite having to refer to them as friends.

And finally, Briar‘s Book. Definitely the most emotional of the series for me, as I‘ve gotten attached to these characters both from my original read and this time around. Now, on to something new! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Completed. Kind of an ironic story considering we are in the middle of a pandemic right now.

New audio nook to start. I have been slowly reading this series for a long while now. It will be nice to close this story and finish.

BehindthePages I loved this series! There are two follow up ones also :) 4y
Darklunarose @BehindthePages i think I have two of one of them and I have some of the Alana series in my shelf too. 4y

It sure was quiet on my way to work! Managed to get lots of reading in 😊 I‘m currently doing a reread of this series through the full cast audiobooks—they‘re brilliant! #24in48

swishandflick I tend to get antsy when I'm the only one on a subway car, haha! Something disconcerting about it. 7y

missevievelyn @Godmotherx5 it‘s a Sunday morning and I‘m heading away from downtown, near the end of the line. It‘s usually pretty quiet, just not quite this quiet! 7y
