I dont want to get out of bed.Im so stupid.I did so many things wrong.I dont know what to do.Im going to be in so much trouble. What am I going to do?Im completely screwed. In 1991, fourteen-year-old Brent Runyon came home from school, doused his bathrobe in gasoline, put it on, and lit a match. He suffered third-degree burns over 85% of his body and spent the next year recovering in hospitals and rehab facilities. During that year of physical recovery, Runyon began to question what hed done, undertaking the complicated journey from near-death back to high school, and from suicide back to the emotional mainstream of life.In the tradition of Running with Scissors and Girl, Interrupted, The Burn Journals is a truly remarkable book about teenage despair and recovery. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I read this book as it came up in my recommendations. At first I assumed it was realistic fiction, but it was so detailed. After a little research I found out it was actually the authors story. This book is a great read. I do wish it was longer though.

Book 1 of 30 for the year!

This was a reread for me, having read it for the first time when I was still in high school, by accident really. I picked it up because of the cover.

I liked it significantly less than I remember, but sometimes we just grow out of books, and I think that's the case here. I'll be donating it to my library, so maybe another high schooler will pick it up by chance.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, it kept me up reading past 3am two nights in a row, so that‘s good. Brent also did a good job capturing what his middle school self was thinking, using language he would have used back then.

But overall, it wasn‘t well written & it‘s clear he got a book deal because of his unique experience, not because he‘s a good writer. He‘s offensive to women & refuses to acknowledge his mental illness in a meaningful way.

I‘m curious... for me? That‘s a tough one. I had several books in mind but I guess the FIRST would be from when I was in high school. I read “The Burn Journals” by Brent Runyon and I remember being pretty into that book.

The Burn Journals
This NF novel is a more sensitive, mature book aimed for high schoolers. I personally think this would be a great IR book as it talks about the authors experience with suicide and how he tried killing himself in a fire. Although it is a little intense, high school students can make a world to self connection with this and hopefully help with suicide awareness. The UDL strategy 7.3 minimize threats and distractions

DrSpalding Definitely for high school students. While assessing students knowledge of what they read is important, this can be done in other ways beyond 50 question tests too. 7y

What a weird book. I found Brent to be extremely unlikeable and not really willing to deal with his mental illness. I am not sure how I feel about this one.

Trying to finish my book but Cooper requires my lap for a pillow. If I try to open the book, he noses it shut.
