My #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin reads for May. Most months, my BookSpin and DoubleSpin reads offer a study in contrast. But this month I get a double dose of short-form science fiction deliciousness. I'm already well into the DoubleSpin read, and will probably finish today or tomorrow

Thanks @TheAromaofBooks !

Pickpick

The Sept-Oct 2022 issue is mostly satisfying. I expect the one that will stick with me longest is Alastair Reynolds's pensive cover story, in which a space merchant experiences a virtual afterlife on Mars's moon Deimos. I also quite liked Eleanor Arnason's "Grandmother Troll," in which a girl wakes a troll while visiting her family's summer home in rural Iceland, and Greg Egan's "Solidity" which imagines a world without object permanence.

Mehso-so

July/Aug 2022 issue is full of near-misses for me. Best is Octavia Cade's short story, "Pollen and Salt," a near-future story about a scientist investigating changes of terrain affected by climate change. But even that feels barely sf and more a mood piece than a story. I hope to keep up with these better in the new year
