Mystery fiction. Detective and mystery stories. Historical fiction. The year is 1001 and King Aethlred, a man haunted by his past and troubled by his future has lost his queen. To protect his lands and to retain his very crown he must chose his bride with care. The men with lands in the north would wed him to Elgiva, daughter of Aelfhelm, who is as beautiful as she is ambitious, but the men with lands in the south would urge him to look beyond the narrow sea to Normandy for a bride. The prophecies state that Aelthred's choice will change history and his advisors will stop at nothing to protect their interests. So when Emma, his Normandy Bride, is offered as the pawn in this game of intrigue and revenge, she understands that her every choice could mean death for those that she loves, and that her enemies lie not only in her court and her chamber, but even in her bed. Shadow on the Crown is an epic tale of intrigue, war, and unrequited love. Patricia Bracewell, an outstanding new voice in historic fiction, weaves together a plot that spans countries and dynasties to extraordinary dramatic effect.

Although I‘m only rating it “ok”, I will add the second book to my tbr. I don‘t think I‘ve read anything (or if I have, it‘s very little) about this time period, so I‘d like to know more. I listened to the audio, so I‘m certain that‘s why I missed things. It did pick up for me in the middle. There were a few other perspectives in the book, but it took me a while to “catch” this

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another one finished! I really loved reading this one, and I have to say—I must get my hands on more books about this early Anglo-Saxon period!

Crazeedi A new author for me in historical fiction, I'll have to investigate! 5y

Loosely based on the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, this is the story of Emma of Normandy who became Queen of England by wedding King Athelred in 1002. This was good. If you're a fan of Philippa Gregory or Elizabeth Chadwick you will enjoy this. The first in a trilogy of which 2 are published so far.
