Les Miserables
Les Miserables | Marcia Williams
6 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Victor Hugo s epic masterpiece is retold and illustrated by Marcia Williams in her signature comic-book style. Travel back to nineteenth-century France with ex-convict Jean Valjean as he tries to put his criminal past behind him and his fate intertwines with the ruthless Inspector Javert, determined to put Valjean back behind bars; the poor factory worker Fantine, whose struggle to provide for her child leads to her death; her orphaned daughter, Cosette, whom Valjean saves from poverty and neglect; and Cosette s besotted suitor, Marius. As a revolution sweeps through Paris, can Valjean elude Javert and secure a happy life for Cosette before all is lost? Follow their story in Marcia Williams s entertaining and easily digestible retelling for young readers."

Pickpick

The novel begins in 1815 with the release of Jean Valjean, a former convict who served 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. He struggles to find work and shelter due to his status as an ex-convict, marked by society and hindered by his yellow ticket of leave.

Got this for my daughters. 8 y/o decided to try it, because she got a kick out of the thought of writing it on her reading log for her teacher. 😂. Went up to check on her, to see if any comprehension was happening..
Me: “so what‘s happening?”
8: “well there‘s a bunch of people, and there‘s a bunch of different things happening in every chapter. “
Me: Ok, what‘s happening right now?
8: “someone is trying to make someone else go to jail.”
💯

It‘s been a really busy first day of 2019 with a lot of family stuff. I‘m finally able to sit down for one of my 2019 reading goals - reading Les Mis on Serial Reader. If I stay on track, I should finish some time in August.

BarbaraBB It‘s a great book, you‘ll love it! 5y
Redwritinghood @BarbaraBB Everyone says that, but I‘ve never gotten around to reading it. I thought this might be a good way to tackle it. (edited) 5y
readordierachel Good luck! Serial reader seems like a smart approach, otherwise that page count is so daunting. 5y

thebluestocking I really love this idea. I‘m going to go check out the app. Good luck with Les Mis! 5y
mklong Good luck! I just picked this one back up after putting it down for a while in December. I‘m hoping to finish before I see the musical in March. 5y
Redwritinghood @mklong How far along are you? Hope you can finish before your show. I‘ve already seen it live 3 times and watched the movie. 5y
mklong I‘m about halfway through. I‘ve only seen it once before and that was almost 20 years ago, but I have watched the 20th Anniversary Concert DVD so many times, it‘s almost embarrassing. 5y
