Night Dance: A Retelling of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses"
Night Dance: A Retelling of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" | Suzanne Weyn
1 post | 8 read | 10 to read
Under the stars, in a secret world... Rowena, the youngest of twelve sisters, loves to slip out of the castle at night and dance in a magical forest. Soon she convinces her sisters to join her. When Sir Ethan notices that his daughters' slippers look tattered every morning, he is certain they've been sneaking out. So he posts a challenge to all the suitors in the kingdom: The first man to discover where his daughters have been is free to marry the one he chooses. Meanwhile a handsome young knight named Bedivere is involved in a challenge of his own: to return the powerful sword, Excalibur, to a mysterious lake. While looking for the lake, Bedivere meets the beautiful Rowena and falls for her. Bedivere knows that accepting Sir Ethan's challenge is the only opportunity for him to be with Rowena forever. But this puts both Bedivere and Rowena in a dangerous situation...one in which they risk their lives for a chance at love.

Pickpick

My goal for the #FairyTaleReadingChallenge is to read retellings that are already on my TBR!! I have read books from this "series" (not actually connected at all & written by different authors) before & while they are generally solid concepts, they tend to be just a little too short. However, Weyn chose to set the 12 Dancing Princesses stories as a sort of post-King Arthur tale, with the line knight left from the Round Table trying to fulfill ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) his vow to Arthur to return Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake. This meant that there didn't need to be as much world-building for the story to make sense, so I wasn't as aggravated by the brevity of the story. The instalove aspect was a little hard to swallow, since it was foundational to all that followed, but sometimes you just have to roll with it!! All in all, a soft pick. Not bad for a one-off, but not one I see myself rereading. 3y
TheAromaofBooks This one scored me my first #BookSpinBingo !!! It also (combined with my chapter-a-day reads) put me at 1178/2500pgs for #NutsinMay - it really has been nuts this week so reading time has just not been happening like I want it to!! This weekend looks like another big work weekend around the house - trying to get everything transitioned from winter to summer mode!! - so not sure how much reading will happen! Ah well. @Andrew65 @Charityann 3y
Andrew65 Still a good total. 3y

Clare-Dragonfly Wow, that sounds like a really interesting setting! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Clare-Dragonfly - It really is a fun idea, but while I enjoyed it, the story just wasn't fleshed out enough to really make it a favorite. I feel that way every time I read one of these “Once Upon a Time“ stories. Half the time they feel like someone sent in an idea of a story & the publisher just printed it like that instead of waiting until it was finished. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly Oh dear 😂 3y
