What an underrated gem! The author covered topics I both knew about and didn‘t know with grace, humor, and emotion. I appreciated how mental illness was covered in this book-instead of a magic fix, the characters continued to struggle and make improvements.

Just finished this book and I am so emotional! It discussed very sensitive issues, such as mental illness. Though this was a Chinese-Australian experience, a lot of the topics were relatable. I gave it 5 stars 🌟.

Anna is pushed at school to “realise her potential“, because she's Asian-Australian. She just wants to work in her Dad's Chinese restaurant, and hang out with the new Macbeth-quoting delivery boy. Her life is complicated by her sibling caring responsibilities - their mother has taken to her bed, again, & her Dad has withdrawn and is sleeping at the restaurant.

[Content notes for involuntary psych admission, suicide backstory, harm to an animal.]

Freespirit It sounds great! 5y
Lauredhel @Freespirit It is REALLY great! One thing I love about YA is that I can start a novel knowing it deals with some really difficult/grim topics, and it will almost always finish with notes of hope. Can't always rely on that with “adult“ “Literature“....

This is super well written, too. An author to watch.

Forgot to post the other day. I went to the launch of The Surprising Power of a Good Dumpling, where there were dumplings, and it was great. Really enjoying reading so far and it was very interesting to hear Wai Chim talk about the choices she made writing this book.
It deals with important topics like mental illness, racism and microagressions. #loveozya
