A portion of the tagged book made my eyes all sweaty. She was talking about the loss of her much loved dog.

Most books won‘t make me cry but portions will get me teary eyed.

The Fake: A Novel | Zoe Whittall

Page-turning! Two people, a newly divorced 40-year-old straight guy (Gibson), and a 30-something lesbian (Shelby), whose wife has died recently and unexpectedly, get drawn in by a charismatic pathological liar and only figure it out after they meet. Femme dyke, anxiety, and grief representation with Shelby are extremely well done. I love Whittall's #queer characters, because they feel so much like the queer people I know IRL. Great #audiobook!

Oof I forgot how real Zoe Whittall's descriptions of anxiety are, so real it is hard to read sometimes as someone with anxiety. You can tell she is so familiar with it.

Meaning she should take a deep breath. Love you!!

Reggie This reminds me of The Interview with the Vampire where they put Claudia and that woman out in the sun and they turn to stone. Great job. 3w

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I‘m certainly glad I read this book! Freedom versus tyranny and a battle of wills you won‘t forget.
Triggers: racism and misogyny throughout

Picked this based on title alone. It was worth it. The twists are good and the build up to them is well written.

Excellent book.
Mental health and feminism. Rebuilding yourself and understanding yourself.
Tendler told her story is a way that was easy to follow. I don‘t know if it was slightly sugar coated or more detail just wasn‘t necessary. I did get frustrated that she mentioned her divorce multiple times and yet we never get any story on that. We get the story on other men but not that one, it‘s odd to me.
Well written. Interesting.

merelybookish Great review! Her famous husband was conspicuously absent. I wonder if she signed an NDA as part of their divorce. Still, I think we are meant to infer that he is similar to all the men before him. 1mo
OrangeMooseReads @merelybookish I guess I need to do some googling. I wasn‘t aware he was famous. It‘s very likely that is the case though with the NDA. 1mo
OrangeMooseReads @merelybookish So that‘s the ex! Yeah, I‘m going to say the drugs and alcohol may have contributed to the divorce. I also feel like I haven‘t heard great things about him and women. 1mo

I didn‘t enjoy this as much as Let‘s Pretend This Never Happened. Overall, a good read and I appreciated her descriptions and stories of her mental health journey.

Ah, depressed women in psychiatric hospitals. We‘ve seen this movie. But this book wove in all the writers in this instance so it‘s more of a literary review. Also she was hospitalized in the 90s! Incredible.

This has been one of my favorite books since I first read it at age 13. Sylvia Plath will always hold a special place in my heart.
