Awakening the Buddha Within
Awakening the Buddha Within: Eight Steps to Enlightenment : Tibetan Wisdom for the Western World | Surya Das, Lama Surya Das
7 posts | 10 read | 14 to read
In this comprehensive book, Lama Surya Das provides a bridge between East and West, past, present and future, making sacred and profound Tibetan teachings clear and easily accessible for anyone who wants to lead a more enlightened and sane life. Utilizing the unique Buddhist guidelines embodied in the Noble Eight Fold Path and the traditional Three Enlightenment Trainings of Virtue, Meditation and Wisdom, he elucidates the tried and true path of spiritual transformation - including key principles such as karma, rebirth and mind-training, as well as the highest, most secret teaching of Tibet, Dzogchen. In this wonderful marriage of the practical and the profound, Lama Surya Das reveals how sacred wisdom can be integrated into our busy lives. He offers a unique approach to the comprehensive wisdom of ancient Tibetan teachings on conscious living and dying and shows that the power of the Buddha is resting within us all. Drawing on Buddhist spirituality and wisdom, this is a view of the world written for Western seekers.

If you‘re looking for a short, relevant explanation of Buddhist principles, Lama Surya Das is your guy. Because he‘s a Westerner, his ability to place the principles in a context that makes sense for Western lives is unique. That said, this is an older book. It was published in 1998, so it doesn‘t address 21st-century lifestyle changes. Still, I found it to be a place of peace and comfort in my busy life.

dariazeoli I bought this book last year and hope to tackle it for #MountTBR next year! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @dariazeoli It‘s worth the time! 7y
Caksf I read this one a few years ago and agree that it‘s well written and concise. The author inspired me to do some more research on the topic. I would also recommend you try “Buddha‘s Brain” If you want a quick read that delves further into the topic. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Caksf Yes, I agree it‘s an introductory book. Sometimes the basics are a good place to start. I‘ll check out Buddha‘s Brain - thanks!! 7y
Caksf @babarathebibliophage “Buddha‘s Brain” is also an introductory book, but the author delves into the neurological components of meditation and why it‘s so effective! I loved both books :) 7y

This was a pivotal Buddhist learning book for me, during my earlier years in Tibetan Buddhism. For anyone who is more seriously interested in learning the basic philosophies behind what Buddhism is all about and want to push aside the fluffy "Zen" books on the bookshelves, this one is for you. In layman's terms, gracefully, the basic principles and key dharmas plus meditation techniques are explained. I go back to this one often.

I broke my no books rule today at B&N, but it wasn't on any of the library ebook systems!

I have no justification for the Funkos except that LOST is one of my favorite shows ever and hello? JACK & SAWYER! Also, Sawyer is reading, so... 👍

Riveted_Reader_Melissa The Sawyer reading one is awesome! (edited) 8y
dariazeoli @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Right?! Looks like he's reading Watership Down, too ☺ 8y
