The Cellist of Sarajevo | Steven Galloway

Pickpick

I loved this book and was halfway thru until I spoke to a colleague at the office who was originally from Sarajevo. When I mentioned I was reading this book, his face fell. Not only did he know the musician this book was based off of, he is a Bosnian Serb, and fought (with guns) to get his family out of Sarajevo during that time. In a nutshell, he told me the book was very one sided, and not to believe everything you read in the news. Wow!

Gezemice Wow! 6y
DivineDiana How true! 6y
Lindy There has been controversy about Galloway‘s use of the cellist character: https://www.google.ca/amp/s/amp.theaustralian.com.au/arts/out-of-the-war-into-a-... and more recent controversy about Galloway as a harasser: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/ubc-and-the-steven-gallowa... 6y
BooksAndChopsticks It was truly incredible to hear my colleague's view on the whole situation. He was shot twice while in the army. He's now living a peaceful life in Canada as a graphic designer with his family. He went on to mention the news anchors (like Amanpour) reporting from Croatia thinking "you have no idea what it's like here, lady!". As one of my favorite people, this man is one of the gentlest, kindest person I know. 6y

I wasn't sure I was going to love this book because of its size - I find a lot of authors could pare down with less filler. But Lamb's writing was honest and engaging. It's the relationships between twin brothers, schizophrenia and themes of nature vs nurture and forgiveness.
I recommend this book for people who (although love) but get tired of women's writing. This was written by a guy, with a distinctive male voice but accessible to all. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Alfoster Yes, loved it too!😍 6y

Finally finished the mammoth Blind Assasin and onto a YA book by John Green. As someone who lives with a person with OCD (real diagnosed OCD, not the self-proclaimed "I'm too neat" kind) - this book so far is terrific. A small glimmer into the kind of crippling anxiety that plagues people with real OCD - and a fresh witty prose through the eyes of this teen. #loves

TrishB Also living with someone with anxiety - it‘s a great awareness raising book. 6y

The Blind Assassin: A Novel | Margaret Atwood

I wanna love this book but truthfully it was a struggle to get into it. The back and forth...timeline switches...the long over-descriptive scenes. Only now nearing the end am I getting interested. Anyone else find that?

DivineDiana Not a favorite! The only Atwood that disappointed. 🙁 (edited) 6y
zezeki I struggled with it as well and I had a really had time liking any of the characters. But now, months later after I've finished it, I still find my self thinking about it. I didn't love it, but it got under my skin I guess. 6y
BooksAndChopsticks Shucks. And I love MA. The sci-fi stuff was weird for me. I'll probably stay away from her other sci-fi books and stick with the more traditional ones. 6y

This book deserves a review even though it creeped me out to no end. Soucy's surreal writing was a breath of fresh air, since reading the same o' mainstream stuff lately. A sister and brother are raised by their eccentric father and grow up locked away, isolated from the world. But this ain't your Flowers in the Attic story. Oh no. Be prepared to at times enjoy Soucy's unique prose and at others, squirm in discomfort. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

OK this book is...weird to say the least. I thought maybe that it was because of the French Canadian translation. But nope, it's Soucy's writing. Haven't decided if I like it yet. Onwards though! 🤔

A charming book written in Kaufman's whimsical writing style. I don't think I enjoyed it as much as his first book, All My Friends Are Super Heroes - but appreciated the Toronto references. Selfishly, I'm hoping his next book can have more meat, more story to sink my teeth into. This one's a quick read.

This was one of the year's best reads for me. I honestly wasn't expecting it to be so good...maybe a modern day version of St. Elmos Fire or something. Boy was I wrong. Yanagihara's writing is poetic and gorgeous, the characters complex and interesting. Be prepared for your heart to swell and break at times. So intense but satisfying.

I highly recommend reading Rutherford's historic fiction novels as his character development and storylines are wonderful and make you forget you are getting a history lesson.
