Gretchen: A Thriller | Shannon Kirk

The new tenants have a terrible secret. So do the landlord and his daughter... Ever since Lucy was two, she's been on the run alongside her mother. She's never understood the reason for a lifetime of paranoia, aliases, and lies. All she understands are the rules: never lock eyes with strangers, never let down your guard, and always be ready to move on. Finally, after thirteen years and eleven states, their next hideaway seems perfect. An isolated, fortresslike place in the New Hampshire woods is the new home they share with its owner, a gentlemanly pianist, and his lonely daughter, Gretchen. She's Lucy's age and soon becomes Lucy's first real friend. But Gretchen and her father have secrets of their own--and an obsession with puzzles that draws Lucy into a terrifying new game of hide-and-seek. Lucy's dark past is about to come calling. And this time, for her and her mother in the house on the hill, it might be too late to run.

Premise: Lucy has been on the run with her mother since she was two. She is tired of running and tired of being lonely so when the new landlord‘s odd daughter tries to befriend her, Lucy‘s vulnerability causes her to ignore a lot of red flags.

Currently reading: Gretchen by Shannon Kirk

I‘m not very far into this yet so I don‘t have much of an opinion. I am eagerly awaiting the creepy factor that everyone has been talking about. I like how the narrator definitely feels like a teen as she tells the story. I‘m looking forward to seeing where this one goes!

What are you reading tonight?

Well I requested this one from #NetGalley purely because of the title- which shares the name of my mother‘s imaginary friend growing up! Told in two perspectives, Lucy longs to not #FlyAway anymore on the run- and thinks she‘s found a #Paradise in New Hampshire... but all is not what it seems in this slow burning thriller. Unfortunately my oasis makes ever cover into something of an #UglyCover! #WanderingJune #SongsOfSummer#JazzyJune #30JuneBooks

TorieStorieS @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thanks! They come back every year- with no work so I like them! 6y
marleed That‘s a great way to pick a book! And how may I ask did Imaginary Gretchen meet her end. I ask because my 3-yr daughter had imaginary friends - Guy, his baby sister Lily, and their Grandma Linda Pride. Eventually they had a comically tragic ending. And that was that, no more imaginary friends. 6y

TorieStorieS @marleed I don‘t think I can tell you....but there‘s more than one Gretchen..... 6y
marleed @TorieStorieS Haha. The names of my daughter‘s imaginary friends were inspired by very obvious people but would be furious if this was noted. I was fascinated because she was way too young to know that an aunt imaginary friend was a thing. 6y
TorieStorieS @rubyslippersreads Thanks- I try to make it work!😊 6y
