The White Woman on the Green Bicycle
The White Woman on the Green Bicycle: A Novel | Monique Roffey
14 posts | 9 read | 11 to read
A beautifully written, unforgettable novel of a troubled marriage, set against the lush landscape and political turmoil of Trinidad Monique Roffey's Orange Prize-shortlisted novel is a gripping portrait of postcolonialism that stands among great works by Caribbean writers like Jamaica Kincaid and Andrea Levy. When George and Sabine Harwood arrive in Trinidad from England, George is immediately seduced by the beguiling island, while Sabine feels isolated, heat-fatigued, and ill-at-ease. As they adapt to new circumstances, their marriage endures for better or worse, despite growing political unrest and racial tensions that affect their daily lives. But when George finds a cache of letters that Sabine has hidden from him, the discovery sets off a devastating series of consequences as other secrets begin to emerge.

Sabine is an English housewife who followed her husband to #Trinidad. He loves it, she hates it and wants to go home. He lies and promises to take her back when he has no intent to do so. She whines and complains and spends much of her time delving into island politics, especially the rise and fall of Eric Williams. A very slim pick. The first half is annoying as heck; the second half improves a bit. Narrator is amazing but Sabine‘s voice is ⬇️

Texreader nails on a chalkboard. I suppose it‘s meant to reflect her nagging, annoying personality. I wish there‘d been some point to the book. There‘s not. Just two people falling in and out of love on an island a long way from where they probably belong. #readingtheAmericas @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB 14mo

Loved this book from Trinidadian author Monique Roffey as part of my #Litsypassport challenge. It provides an understanding of Trinidad and Tobago‘s history from the viewpoint of an immigrant Englishwoman and her husband. A lot of difficult emotions were packed into his one, and it‘ll take me time to process.

Okay, okay, okay. Forget my last post. I wasn't feeling those books right now. It's a rainy, slushy last day of March. I picked up Matcha Green Tea (a new gotta-try-that because I-seen-it-on-YouTube kinda thing) on the way home. Now all that is needed: comfy pjs and a 'green' book.
Ooooh, I'm in love with my own bookshelves. Green book. The word green in the title. Green setting (Trinidad). And green socks on my feet.
I'm set. So long March 2017.

Buddys_Momma I have this book too, can't wait to hear what you think of it! 7y
Nute Isn't it strange how a book will suddenly just stand out on your shelf after several years of ownership? Well, truth be told, I was on the hunt for a green-colored book, and then this appeared in my line of vision. Should we read it together, @Buddys_Momma? 7y
Buddys_Momma I'd be happy to actually, just need to find it! Seriously though, I want my next book to be set in a tropical country because I'm tired of this rainy weather! I'll look today and let you know when I find it 😉 7y
