Prayers for Sale
Prayers for Sale | Sandra Dallas
8 posts | 14 read | 16 to read
Hennie Comfort is eighty-six and has lived in the mountains of Middle Swan, Colorado since before it was Colorado. Nit Spindle is just seventeen and newly married. She and her husband have just moved to the high country in search of work. It's 1936 and the depression has ravaged the country and Nit and her husband have suffered greatly. Hennie notices the young woman loitering near the old sign outside of her house that promises "Prayers For Sale". Hennie doesn't sell prayers, never has, but there's something about the young woman that she's drawn to. The harsh conditions of life that each have endured create an instant bond and an unlikely friendship is formed, one in which the deepest of hardships are shared and the darkest of secrets are confessed. Sandra Dallas has created an unforgettable tale of a friendship between two women, one with surprising twists and turns, and one that is ultimately a revelation of the finest parts of the human spirit.

WOW! I honestly expected this book to end in a tragedy. It was such a good read from page 1 all the way to page 305. I think I may have discovered the next aurthor for me.

I just learned there were hookers and prostitutes in 1859.. Who knew🤷🤔

TrishB They say it‘s the oldest profession. 5y
Book_Lover95 That is exactly what my boyfriend said when I told him 5y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I visited the site of a brothel at an ancient Roman ruin in Morroco, dating back to the 3rd century BC (or something like that). Prostitution has been around since the beginning of mankind basically. 5y

Book_Lover95 SERIOUSLY?! I'd never thought it would have even been a thing, especially back then 5y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Yup! A quick read on the history of prostitution, if you're interested. https://www.thoughtco.com/history-of-prostitution-721311 5y

Just started this book about ah hour and a half ago and I'm already hooked! I already feel myself getting all emotional over 2 characters 🤦😭. I honestly did not expect to like this book, much less this EARLY on in the read. P.S. yes I'm eating Chef Boyardee Beefaroni with cheese (I'm a weird eater)

My #shadesofblue shelf. My book collection was much diminished when I had to downsize to move across the country to a small studio apartment. So only the most precious made the cut for the journey. I have added some since I got here though. There is a little more room in my little apartment for another bookcase if I get rid of something...😂. #septphotochallenge #somethingforsept
