Mr. Wayne's Masterpiece
Mr. Wayne's Masterpiece | Patricia Polacco
3 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
In this inspiring true story, beloved artist Patricia Polacco conquers her fear of public speaking, allowing her to discover her remarkable voice. A wonderful companion to Thank You, Mr. Falker and The Art of Miss Chew, it celebrates the lifelong impact of a great teacher. Speaking in front of an audience terrifies Trisha. Ending up in Mr. Wayne’s drama class is the last thing she wants! But Mr. Wayne gives her a backstage role painting scenery for the winter play. As she paints, she listens to the cast rehearse, memorizing their lines without even realizing it. Then, days before opening night, the lead actress suddenly moves away, and Trisha is the only other person who knows her part. Will the play have to be canceled? It won’t be an easy road—when Trisha tries to recite the lines in front of the cast, nothing comes out! But Mr. Wayne won’t let her give up, and with his coaching, Trisha is able to become one of his true masterpieces.

#Movember Day 19: Mr Wayne‘s #Masterpiece is another picturebook memoir from Patricia Polacco. The narrative was coherent, tightly-woven, and presented with little drama and frills, jumping right into the core of the anxiety as Patricia found something within her that allowed her to transcend her fear of performing and public speaking. Cinfhen I have a problem with wordy picture books... while the illustrations are wonderful it looks like the pages are crowded with words 5y

Mr Wayne‘s Masterpiece is a RF book by Patricia Polacco. I would love to adapt this into a RT! I think that Readers Theater could help with fluency while helping students connect to Patricia and her process of getting over her fears of speaking in front of people! https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Mr-Waynes-Masterpiece-by-Patricia-Po... this is a link to TPT. #ucflae3414sp18

KaitlynN I chose this resource as an example of how you could work through the book with students before introducing RT. It breaks down setting, characters, plot, and even includes a way to graph who is fearful of speaking in front of people (like with a bar graph and pie chart!) UDL strategy 7.2 is a match for this book because students can authentically connect to the story. ESOL strategy 48 fits too because this is a hands on group assignment! 7y

"He taught me to speak from the heart and to believe in myself. But most of all he taught me that all of us are masterpieces if given the chance and encouragement--to be one."

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm adding this one to my to read list! 8y
Sheryl @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just discovered her. She's written and illustrated a slew of picture books. Loved all I've read so far. :) 8y
