pickI thoroughly enjoyed this Golden Age murder mystery. The characters are almost all over-the-top cariacatures, and as such, were hilarious. Gossip and judgment turns to murder and there‘s suspicion all around—and there‘s no shortage of witty dialogue and clever characterization along the way. This was my December #BookSpin (yes, another belated review!).
“Mrs Napier walked slowly to the middle of the terrace, noted the oncoming car, looked round to make sure that she was fully observed, crossed her legs deliberately, and fell heavily on to the red gravel drive.”
Now that‘s a great opening sentence!! 😂

My last two spins of the year are: a mystery from my Kindle TBR (I‘d love to use it for the #christmascrimechallenge if I can make it fit a prompt), and one from my library list that I‘ve been meaning to read forever (and it fits a year I need for #192025). pickA lesser known author of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, Harriet Rutland only wrote 3 mysteries, this, her debut, in 1938. It was enjoyable, once I got past the many character introductions - 20 in the first 2 pages- which was almost enough to make me stop reading right then! The amateur detective wasn‘t introduced until late in the story, and he reminded me slightly of Allingham‘s Campion or Sayers‘ Lord Peter. I‘ll read more. 4⭐️ #2019
