This book, sent to me by a fellow BookCrosser, was a charming story,, slow paced but still very engaging, with some really lovely passages. It has motivated me to read more poetry.

This has to be one of the best notes I've ever written in an #lmpbc book!

@jhod it will be on it's way back to you soon!

jhod Ha very good! Pleased you liked it! It was one of those where the hype ruined it for me I think as I had such high expectations 7mo
jenniferw88 To be fair, anything is better than mine - I'm sorry it was a dud. I should have changed my choice as I was struggling with it! @Mrs_B 7mo

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I fell in love with this book. The author Lara Maiklem is so passionate that it feels like you're walking with her along the river while together you find treasures from the past. I was reading it very slowly because I didn't want it to finish but I didn't only read it, I felt it.
#2019 #19822022 @Librarybelle a book in your "wheelhouse" ?

Librarybelle Haha…now you have a new term to remember! 😂 This sounds fantastic, and I am so glad you enjoyed it! 11mo
julesG Mudlarking is fun. And I'm wondering why I took this book off my TBR 🤔 11mo
Dodi @Librarybelle Yes and I'm looking forward to learning many more! 😁 @julesG The important thing is that it's now back in it! 😅 11mo

julieclair @julesG Sounds like you may have actually done some mudlarking? I have never even heard the term before. 10mo
julesG Yes, took my kids down to the Thames one time we were in London. We didn't find treasures. Part of a clay pipe. 10mo

6am Sunday morning... LOVING this book 😍

#mudlarking #19822022 #2019

Magpiegem I love this book too!! Do you mudlark? X 12mo
Dodi @Magpiegem Sadly, not. I've always lived near the river in London and hadn't heard about this until only a few weeks ago. Where I live now the river foreshore is inaccessible unfortunately. It's all so fascinating! Do you live closeby to a place where larking is possible? x 12mo
Magpiegem I‘m from London and I think my fascination started because my dad (a builder) used to come home with pottery and prehistoric sharks teeth when he was digging up foundations on what used to be the bank of the Thames hundreds or thousands of years ago. I live in Brighton now and there are rivers near by to lark. But I‘m a treasure hunter where ever I go, shore lines, Victorian dumps… I love an old bottle 😄 xx 12mo

Librarybelle This sounds fascinating! I‘m in the US, but books like these are in my wheelhouse! 12mo
Dodi @Magpiegem Ahh, it sounds so cool! What are the Victorian dumps? 😅 Is it easy to find things on the beach in Brighton? When I was young I was encouraged to throw away everything that was old but now I'm starting to be attracted by all of this!! 😍 12mo
Dodi @Librarybelle What's a “wheelhouse“? 🤓 This book is triggering lots of emotions for me...😊 12mo
Dodi @Magpiegem If you happen to be in London let me know and we can have a coffee together near the Thames! 🙂 xx 12mo
Magpiegem @Dodi “in your wheelhouse” means it‘s your cup of tea 😊 12mo
Dodi @Magpiegem Ahhhhh, hahah, thank you so much, I had looked on Google what “wheelhouse“ meant but I was confused. 😅 x 12mo
Magpiegem @Dodi that would be lovely, thank you 😊 there are old dumps all over the place. You often find small ones on country walks on the other side of the path from old cottages, you‘ll see an old bottle or something else sticking out of the mud. People used to dump there glass rubbish etc in one spot and now I think it‘s treasure 😂 we stayed in a cottage on a river in Devon last summer and on the riverbank I found tons of old jars and bottles xx 12mo
Dodi @Magpiegem How interesting, it sounds like travelling back in time! For free! 😂 xx 12mo
Librarybelle Thanks for helping out @Magpiegem ! Sorry, @Dodi …I‘m interested in these types of books! 😁 12mo
Dodi @Librarybelle No need to apologise ☺️ in fact, I love to learn English sayings... I was picturing a house with wheels 🤣 🤣 12mo

I had a hard time with this difficult books about women in #Ethiopia at war against Italy in the 1930s. The characters (Hirut, Kidane and Aster) were introduced well but soon they became mere characters in ongoing descriptions of battles, sieges, and rape. In between we learned about Haile Selassi leaving his country in need, but even this part didn‘t really work for me.

Simona Ha! Your review reminded me that I have still in my TBR pile 13mo
DGRachel She edited Addis Ababa Noir and I was…disappointed in that entire anthology and her short story. Your review confirms that I will not be picking up more of her work. 13mo
squirrelbrain I tried to read this when it was on the Booker list, but hated it and bailed. 13mo

Cinfhen Me too @squirrelbrain !!! I bailed after a few hours of audio listening. I thought it had potential but it was requiring too much from me. Kudos to you, Barbara for sticking with it. 13mo
Librarybelle That‘s a shame! 13mo
Megabooks Skipping this one! Thanks! 13mo
Daisey I listened to this one for FoodAndLit last year and also had a hard time with it. It was difficult content, and it didn‘t live up to the potential I thought it had in the beginning. 13mo
BarbaraBB @Simona That will be much more interesting. I think Selassi was a fascinating man but I didn‘t learn much about him in this book! 13mo
BarbaraBB @DGRachel @squirrelbrain @Cinfhen @Daisey I‘m glad I‘m not the only one struggling! 13mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I would! 13mo
StellaB I gave up on this too. 13mo
BarbaraBB @StellaB If I had known so many people had bailed I wouldn‘t have picked it up! 13mo
StellaB I didn‘t get far enough to even put it on here 🙂 13mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage Books about battles are just 😫 and then to add rape on top of it … I just can‘t. Extra kudos to you for prevailing! 13mo
Cinfhen Where is the photo taken ??? So cool 🐑 13mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen In the dunes near the beach, about 20 kilometers from where I live! I had been walking along the beach when I came upon them! 13mo

This was a great read. While I loved Winter in Paradise, What Happens in Paradise and Summer of '69 and loved the writing and story lines, this one was a bit of a let down.
It was a epic love story between Mallory and Jake, but I wish Mallory would have found her “one“ that she could spend the years with, and not long for that one weekend.
The ending is set up great for a sequal.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick These little recaps of the years are so wild. Thank you for sharing them. 3y

I loved this. Not sure why it took me so long to get to it. It was like The Secret History meets Shutter Island. I generally dislike diary entries as a storytelling device, but it didn‘t bother me here. #botm #backlist #2019
